Halloween Mini Review – Season of The Witch by Sarah Rees Brennan (Spoiler-Free)

As I promised before, I have tooons of Halloween-y posts ready for you, so I’ll pretty much be posting twice a week the whole month – yup, just so I can accomodate all that spooky goodness 🕷️

I’m a big fan of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, as you probably know, so of course I couldn’t be happier to review this prequel of the show!

Whether you have watched it or not, I think this is a super fun book for anyone looking to read more witchy stories.

This is a spoiler-free review and all opinions are my own.

It’s the summer before her sixteenth birthday, and Sabrina Spellman knows her world is about to change. She’s always studied magic and spells with her aunts, Hilda and Zelda. But she’s also lived a normal mortal life – attending Baxter High, hanging out with her friends Susie and Roz, and going to the movies with her boyfriend, Harvey Kinkle.

Now time is running out on her every day, normal world, and leaving behind Roz and Susie and Harvey is a lot harder than she thought it would be…

Sabrina has always been attracted to the power of being a witch. But now she can’t help wondering if that power is leading her down the wrong path. Will she choose to forsake the path of light and follow the path of night?

🕷️ I really liked how the author made the book’s events connect so seamlessly to the show’s. They also explained so many of the things that had left me scratching my head after I finished it (and so many things I had no idea I had questions about?), filling in all the gaps in the most amazing of ways. I was honestly very impressed!

🕷️ The tone of the book is exactly the same as the show’s – deliciously dark humour, ridiculously clever, sassy in all the right ways – it’s almost like they hired the actual show runners to write this!

🕷️ I also loved how each chapter was dedicated to a different character’s POV. Brennan had such a strong grasp of all their individual voices I had no trouble picturing them saying and acting exactly that way in my head. I also felt really connected to them.

🕷️ I loved all of the dynamics between characters but I had special appreciation for Tommy – he’s not in the show much, but in this book he shone with a light of his own and his backstory really made my heart ache for him 💔

🕷️ Sabrina and Harvey’s relationship honestly melts my heart in the gooeyest of ways – he’s the softest boyfriend ever and I ship them so hard ❤ All the other characters were spot on as well – Sabrina’s family is an absolute delight!

🕷️ The various conflicts and antagonists could have been a bit more fleshed out and relevant to the plot. I felt like they were there to move the narrative along but not always in the most memorable of ways.

I laughed hard, got a bit teary-eyed, aaaawww’ed a lot, and wanted to rewatch The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina by the time I was done. This is a TV tie-in done amazingly well and I’m so glad I got to read it ❤

I went in with super high expectations, craving for something to bring me back all that spooky cosiness Sabrina made me experience last year, and I was not disappointed – in fact, I was very much surprised!

Season of the Witch is an absolute must for fans of the show, as well as newcomers who don’t need to know anything about it to enjoy this prequel. Go, go, go!
