πŸ‚ Hello again, fellow readers! πŸ‚

I hope you’re enjoying your week so far πŸ˜„

As I promised before, I have tooons of Halloween-y posts ready for you, so I’ll pretty much be posting twice a week the whole month – yup, just so I can accomodate all that spooky goodness πŸ•·οΈ

Can you tell I’m excited about this time of year? 😈

I’m a big fan of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, as you probably know, so of course I couldn’t be happier to review this prequel of the show!

Whether you have watched it or not, I think this is a super fun book for anyone looking to read more witchy stories.

So grab your Pumpkin Spice Latte, sit back, relax, and enjoy! πŸŽƒ

Thank you so much to Scholastic for kindly providing me with a review copy of Season of The Witch by Sarah Rees Brennan.

This is a spoiler-free review and all opinions are my own.

Halloween Mini Review - Season of The Witch by Sarah Rees Brennan (Spoiler-Free)

It’s the summer before her sixteenth birthday, and Sabrina Spellman knows her world is about to change. She’s always studied magic and spells with her aunts, Hilda and Zelda. But she’s also lived a normal mortal life – attending Baxter High, hanging out with her friends Susie and Roz, and going to the movies with her boyfriend, Harvey Kinkle.

Now time is running out on her every day, normal world, and leaving behind Roz and Susie and Harvey is a lot harder than she thought it would be…

Sabrina has always been attracted to the power of being a witch. But now she can’t help wondering if that power is leading her down the wrong path. Will she choose to forsake the path of light and follow the path of night?

πŸ•·οΈ I really liked how the author made the book’s events connect so seamlessly to the show’s. They also explained so many of the things that had left me scratching my head after I finished it (and so many things I had no idea I had questions about?), filling in all the gaps in the most amazing of ways. I was honestly very impressed!

πŸ•·οΈ The tone of the book is exactly the same as the show’s – deliciously dark humour, ridiculously clever, sassy in all the right ways – it’s almost like they hired the actual show runners to write this!

πŸ•·οΈ I also loved how each chapter was dedicated to a different character’s POV. Brennan had such a strong grasp of all their individual voices I had no trouble picturing them saying and acting exactly that way in my head. I also felt really connected to them.

πŸ•·οΈ I loved all of the dynamics between characters but I had special appreciation for Tommy – he’s not in the show much, but in this book he shone with a light of his own and his backstory really made my heart ache for him πŸ’”

πŸ•·οΈ Sabrina and Harvey’s relationship honestly melts my heart in the gooeyest of ways – he’s the softest boyfriend ever and I ship them so hard ❀ All the other characters were spot on as well – Sabrina’s family is an absolute delight!

πŸ•·οΈ The various conflicts and antagonists could have been a bit more fleshed out and relevant to the plot. I felt like they were there to move the narrative along but not always in the most memorable of ways.

I laughed hard, got a bit teary-eyed, aaaawww’ed a lot, and wanted to rewatch The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina by the time I was done. This is a TV tie-in done amazingly well and I’m so glad I got to read it ❀

I went in with super high expectations, craving for something to bring me back all that spooky cosiness Sabrina made me experience last year, and I was not disappointed – in fact, I was very much surprised!

Season of the Witch is an absolute must for fans of the show, as well as newcomers who don’t need to know anything about it to enjoy this prequel. Go, go, go!

    1. Thank you so much, Jenna! That means a lot πŸ™‚
I enjoy shorter reviews from time to time, especially when I don’t have a lot of time to write them or read other people’s, so it’s really a win-win situation hahaha
If you love the show then I’m sure you’ll enjoy the book ❀

  1. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a book?😱😱 It’s a show as well!?! HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT IT BEFORE BECAUSE THE TITLE SOUNDS FUCKING AMAZING!? πŸ˜±πŸ˜±πŸ˜±πŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ‘»

I like chapter-wise POVs AS WELL! It gives the reader enough time to REALLLLLYYY know about the characters and connect with them! The major drawback i think is that sometimes I get too attached to a single character and I sort of skim others’ chapters to get to the one I love! 🀣🀣🀣 I AM SURE I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE RIGHT!? YOU DO IT TOOOOO!?!?

Your review has made me wanna drop everything and just go and watch that show!! 😍😍❀️❀️ LOVED IT, Sophie! AS ALWAYSSSS YOUR POST GLADDENED MY HEARTTTT!! πŸ˜πŸ˜β€οΈβ€οΈπŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜πŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ‘»

    1. YEESSS!! Omg you need to go watch it ASAP – I recommend you do before reading the book, actually, despite this being a prequel (though it won’t be a problem if you decide to read it first, either, it’s just my personal opinion)
It depends! Sometimes I really hate different POV chapters – precisely for that reason, and sometimes just because the writer doesn’t really change their personality so it feels like the same exact character every time, which is just lazy. Hahaha I do that too!! Ooops…
Aaaww thank you so much, darling ❀ ❀ ❀ You're too sweet!

      1. Oh? The series is better than the book then? WELL IF YOU SAYYY SOOOOO!! Because I do so hate it when I watch something BEFORE reading the related book, you knowww!! BUTTTT since YOU yourself are recommending it that way, MUST BE THE RIGHT WAYYY TO DO ITT! ❀️😘😘😘😘 DONNEEEEE!! πŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ‘»

I agree with the personality thing! WHATS THE FUCKING POINT IN DOING THE multiple POVs IF YOU DONT SUCCEEDD IN GIVING THEM THEIR OWN UNIQUE VOICE??! In this aspect, Patrick Gale totally ROCKED Rough Music! 😍😍😍😍

You are MOST welcome, SOPHIEEEEE!! πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈπŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ‘»πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜

  2. oooh I love when a connected book really does its duty and connects well!! And I love multiple POVs how fun that everyone got to take a turn!! Sometimes I don’t mind that the villains aren’t up to snuff because its just fun to be around everyone. πŸ˜‰ I’m loving these mini Halloween reviews Sophie!! That last graphic is so super fun.

    1. I didn’t mind it too much either, thus only taking off half a star – and even then, it didn’t actually spoil my enjoyment, it was just something I wasn’t as happy with. Nevertheless, the book is awesome! I definitely recommend everyone reads it πŸ™‚
Aw thank you so much, Dani! You’re a sweetheart ❀

  3. “deliciously dark humour, ridiculously clever, sassy in all the right ways.” Sounds like a lot of fun, Sophie. I could tell from the blurb that the read would be fun, and you confirmed it. Thanks for the mini-review!
