This week’s theme is: Time Travel!
I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with time travel… If it gets a bit too scientific and filled with cosmic rules, you will probably lost me very quickly. I mean, it can get pretty confusing pretty fast!
Before I Fall was quite easy to follow and it was still a clever and consistent way to go about it. I enjoy the whole “reliving the same day over and over again”, if done right. Prisoner of Azkaban was a bit more challenging and required some focus on my part, but otherwise fine.
Now, One Word Kill (which I’m currently reading) is waaaay out of my league. Good thing it’s interesting and a quick read (and also has D&D!) 😂

Blame Chocolate 
I never read Before I Fall, despite all the hype that surrounded it. I also just realized The Book Thief could probably fall into this Theme because it plays with concepts of time and it’s really Death looking back on the past. I loved this month’s team and thank you for tagging my blog 🙂

I read it on a whim, so was not expecting much and was pleasantly surprised! I never read that sort of story/genre.
I’ve never read The Book Thief but the concept sounds super interesting! I’m not sure if it’s time travel, unless there’s actual teleportation to the past/future? If you mean flashbacks, I wasn’t really considering those for the theme but then again, it should fit one’s personal preference 🙂

I loved The Book Thief! I read it years ago and never forgot about it, it’s definitely worth the read. I see what you’re saying about flashbacks though 🙂

I have it on my shelf but have never been in the right mood to pick it up… I know it’s loved by so many people, though, and I’m probably missing out big time 😛

If you’re a fan of historical fiction, it’s definitely well worth the read.
If you’re not though, I can see why it would be harder to pick up

I’m very picky about historicals… They need to have a few elements that make them appealing to me, like a great action plot, political intrigue, romance, or some sort of mystery going on.
I know this one probably has that too, but it all depends on the writing and my mood so I guess it’ll take a while before I consider it!

Time travel is one thing that makes me feel super conflicted. I find that the whole butterfly effect thing really messes with my head, and when you think about them too hard you realise that there is no way it would work out. Although I do have to say, I love time travel when it comes to bringing characters back from the dead hahaha, it’s very convenient, especially if it is a favourite character lol.

I admit I have trouble either keeping up with time travel or enjoying it in books. I keep it for Doctor Who :p

The best time travel story I’ve read in the last decade in Stephen King’s 11/22/63 (read the book before you watch the miniseries). Not only is it one of King’s best latter-day efforts, but it is a deeply engrossing page-turner, and very accessible to those who might otherwise be put off by his reputation for ghouls and gore.

I’ve never read Stephen King before… I think it’s because I mostly know him for his horror stories instead. So yeah, I see what you mean. I didn’t even know there was a miniseries! I feel like I’ve been living under a rock xD

I think surprisingly, the only book I’ve read with time travel is Prisoner of Azkaban, and I think it’s really smartly done in that case because it kinda shows that you really can’t change the past? (At least, that’s what I got out of it). 🤔 That said, I do think that it lowers the stakes a bit if characters time-travel too flippantly, and like you say, I get lost if it gets too scientific. But as long as there are clear rules and limits to time travel, I’m totally down for it myself. 😉

Yeah, I absolutely agree! I think it was probably my first experience with time travel… I’m not sure if that was already a pretty well-known rule or if J.K. was a bit of a pioneer (which I doubt LOL) but it makes total sense to me. It also makes everything a lot more challenging, otherwise it would just get too easy and boring hahaha
It’s like that old saying “if you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” I absolutely agree, especially because most readers need to understand things in order to fully enjoy them (and most readers don’t have a degree in quantum physics!)
So I don’t mind rules at all, I just can’t get behind the scientific jargon and whatnot

Yeah, I’m sure JKR wasn’t the pioneer of that concept, but I sure would like to read more books like it! I like it when time travel doesn’t affect the past – makes things more simplier to understand hehe. 😛
True quote! 👌 The best storytellers know how to tell a story in the most simplest of terms without all the gimmicks to blind or confuse you!

Before I Fall was a surprise for me. It turned out to be one of my favorite YAs a few years ago when I finally decided to pick it up. The rules of time travel were simple but just the ugly truth of the MCs life and the beautifully bittersweet ending made it memorable. Haven’t seen the movie though. Prisoner of Azkaban is a great pick. and I actually really like The Time Machine! But I love how complicated time travel can get. There are so many ways to go about it. Though it all depends on how well the author executes it. There was one book called Cold Summer that went with the “a visit to the past is part of the past.” Even though the book itself could have been better, I appreciate that the author didn’t go with the quintessential butterfly effect lol. But great picks. Will have to check out the others. Haven’t read all that many time travel books, tbh!

Same here! I wasn’t expecting anything from it but was pleasantly surprised, especially because it got a bit repetitive (but didn’t get repetitive if you know what I mean). Couldn’t have put it better, Azia! I watched the movie too and felt it was quite faithful to the original material, which was nice too.
Ah that’s interesting! I’ve never heard about that one… It’s always cool when authors change things up a bit. I don’t mind when they recycle old material either, if done well, but I don’t mind a fresher perspective either!
I haven’t either… Was surprised I actually read that many! xD I hope you enjoy them when you pick them up, Azia ^^ I’m curious about some of these myself.

I might need to check out the movie then. But I also feel like rereading it too. I think it’s been long enough to give it another read to where some parts will feel like new again.
Cold Summer is pretty good, though it’s not at the top of my recommendations list LOL. Time travel is just a really fun concept. Hopefully we can increase the number of books that explore the concept as the years go by 😉

I didn’t love Into the Dim and actually DNFed it. But I so want to read The Marked Girl too. Time travel isn’t my favorite subgenre but when its incorporated well I really enjoy it. This was another theme I really wanted to do! Maybe I need to do a discussion with these topics! ❤️

Nice list! Time Travel is one of my favorite genres! Some of my favorite reads are The Last Magician By Lisa Maxwell, River Of Time Series By Lisa Tawn Bergren, and Steel By Carrie Vaughn.

Great theme! I really enjoy time travel in stories, but I have to say I try not to think too hard about the logic of it because if I discover a paradox that doesn’t make sense I enjoy it less. Also sometimes it just hurts my head 😆
Of the books you mention I’ve read Kindred, and of course Harry Potter. Another book with time travel I love is Anne McCaffrey’s ‘Dragonflight’. I haven’t read the sequels yet but the first one was great, and made really clever use of time travel I thought.

I had no idea Dragonflight had time travel! I read The Smallest Dragonboy by McCaffrey and found it soooo charming and adorable ❤ Instantly made me want to go and read more from her, but alas I had other books to get to first and didn't get a chance to… I look forward to that time travel element then!

Reading this made me realise that I don’t think I’ve ever actually read a time travel book.
(is that possible? It might be)
Maybe I should do something about that! I did recently read How To Stop Time by Matt Haig, which isn’t about time travel but a man who is hundreds of years old – but the narrative jumps about through the centuries. I did not like that, but I don’t think it was the jumpy timeline’s fault.

I have that book but never actually read it… It was a gift that just never grabbed my attention. I suppose it’s just not my type of story! And seeing as it didn’t win you over either, I’m not as keen to try again hahaha

What a lovely theme! I personally do love time travel but I find that a lot of the new stories just rehash the basic rules of time traveling. The Flash (yes, the superhero over at DC Comics) is one that I love for how it tackles ideas related to time-traveling. My most recent time-traveling story is in fact Recursion and it touches on that subject as well hahah Great recommendations as well, Sophie!

I feel that anyone can still bring something new to the table, though, and give their own twist to an already explored subject. Imagination is hard to come by, that’s for sure hahaha

I’m honestly not the BIGGEST fan of time travel – I just don’t see how it could possibly work (but maybe that’s cos I’m not a scientist 😂) however I do agree with you, I think Lauren Oliver executed it very well in Before I Fall! I dunno if you’re a Marvel fan but I thought it was done very well in Avengers: Endgame as well 😉

So glad to hear you liked Before I Fall as well! I did go see Endgame but was so exhausted I ended up falling asleep midway through 😂 Nothing to do with the movie itself, I thought it was done really well (what I did see of it LOL) but yeah I need to watch it properly one day.

This is such a great list! I have read Thief of Lies and that was a fun book. I would love to have the ability to jump from library to library. And then freeze time so I could read ALL the books lol!
