6 Shows Based on Books You Need to Watch Right Now

Did this post sound urgent to you? That’s because it is!

I don’t think there’s anything better than mashing two of everyone’s favourite hobbies together so I thought: TV and books galore ❀

I have to say I did not realise most of these were based on books until quite later on, which is just so sad πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ But a pleasant surprise, still. Plus I think that just made me love them even more. Does that ever happen to you?

Anyway, here are the 6 shows based on books you need to watch right now (in my humble opinion and in no particular order):

1. Lucifer [Amazon Prime / Netflix]

What if the Devil had gotten tired of ruling Hell and decided to go open a nightclub in Los Angeles instead? Oh, and he also becomes a consultant for the LAPD.

I literally have to keep myself from bingewatching this show, otherwise it’ll be over in two days and I’ll have to suffer through withdrawl until season four comes out!

Tom Ellis is the perfect Lucifer Morningstar – charming, seductive, selfish and absolutely delightful. If you don’t fall in love with him on the first episode, then there is something seriously wrong with you. All the other characters are absolutely lovely as well and their companionship and loyalty will fill your heart to the brim.

πŸ‘ For fans of: NEIL GAIMAN; angel/demon stories; non-boring police shows that will make you laugh your butt off; sexy/witty/fun characters and dialogue; (extremely) slowburn romance.

πŸ‘Ž Possible turn offs: the portrayal of Christianity.

2. You [Netflix]

A bookstore manager becomes so obsessed with an aspiring writer he’ll cross any line to get their happily ever after.

This show had to grow on me. The first few episodes were a bit of a hiccup and it certainly didn’t win me right away. But turns out there was a lot more to it than meets the eye. It actually managed to have enough substance and suspense to be a compelling watch until the very end.

It’s perfect for people who want to be kept on the edge of their seat but don’t want anything too hardcore (a.k.a. me!). I also love how social media and technology are presented in it – as literal weapons that can make or break lives.

πŸ‘ For fans of: stalker stories; messed up characters; highly dysfunctional relationships.

πŸ‘Ž Possible turn offs: not as thriller/horror as the creators make it out to be.

❌ Did not read the book // πŸ“Ί Watch the trailer here

3. Anne with an E [Netflix]

Two siblings, both past their prime, decide to take on an orphan boy to help out around their ancestral farm of Green Gables. What they get instead, though, is a spunky redheaded girl who is adamant to win their hearts.

I guarantee you will have moments of immense joy as well as immense sadness with this show! Amybeth McNutty is such a pure soul, she will steal your heart in the very first episode ❀

I do admit it’s quite heavy for a children’s story (as in, it will break your heart) but it didn’t make me enjoy it any less. If you loved the original growing up, definitely give this a try but keep in mind it won’t be quite the same as the book.

πŸ‘ For fans of: orphan stories; childhood romance; countryside wunderlust; female friendships.

πŸ‘Ž Possible turn offs: darker and bleaker than the original.

❌ Did not read the book // πŸ“Ί Watch the trailer here

4. Girlboss [Netflix]

Based on Sophia Amoruso’s autobiography, it tells the story of how she started the company Nasty Gal while working as a campus safety host for San Francisco’s Academy of Art University.

Sophia is impulsive, manipulative, selfish, unkind, unstable, narcissistic and an absolute disaster. I have to say, though, no matter how bad she got, I still rooted for her. I do not condemn her actions, nor do I agree with the paths she chose to take, but her story was certainly an eye-opener when it comes to building a business from scratch.

It will make people angry and annoyed, but it will absolutely bring your inner Girlboss/hustler to the surface. It’s also one of those stories I believe people only hate because the main character is a girl – had she been a man and everyone would have idolised them instead (cough Jordan Belfort cough).

πŸ‘ For fans of: fun and lay back shows; entrepreneurial journeys; girls making it big in the world; fashionistas (or fashion curious).

πŸ‘Ž Possible turn offs: dislikeable main character; too Hollywoodified and unrealistic at times; ruthless and despicable business practices.

❌ Did not read the book // πŸ“Ί Watch the trailer here

5. American Gods [Amazon Prime]

Devasted by the death of his wife, ex-convict Shadow takes on the job of bodyguard for Mr. Wednesday. But who is he? And what does he want with Shadow?

This is quite the dark comedy, incredibly well written and filled with flawed characters you will learn to love… Eventually. The plot itself is nicely constructed and will keep you interested as it subtly explores the greek mythology nuances whilst dealing with some pretty heavy subjects. It was nice to see the creators had taken care not to make the gods and goddesses too obvious and instead allowed the viwer to guess and take things in at their own pace.

It can be a bit too violent at times for my taste, but everything else makes it so worth it I can’t recommend it enough.

πŸ‘ For fans of: NEIL GAIMAN AGAIN; greek mythology; dark comedies; urban fantasies; fleshed out characters; intricate plot; amazing special effects.

πŸ‘Ž Possible turn offs: violence; bleak atmosphere; heavy themes including death.

❌ Did not read the book // πŸ“Ί Watch the trailer here

6. Tidying Up with Marie Kondo [Netflix]

Based on the world-wide bestseller, the show follows Kondo as she visits various American family homes full of clutter and guides them in tidying up their houses through her KonMari method.

Don’t think this is another super stressful show about decluttering and desperate families. Instead, it’s oddly relaxing and Marie is such a pure and loving soul it will be hard not to feel totally zen while watching/listening to her.

Each episode includes a few of her teachings, and because they are often rotated, it never gets too repetitive. All in all, it’s just so incredibly satisfying!

πŸ‘ For fans of: educational shows; organising; home decor.

πŸ‘Ž Possible turn offs: it’s reality TV; Japanese wisdom may not mix well with everyone.

  1. I love this! Now all of my beloved Marvel shows are getting cancelled I’m on the look out for more TV. Lucifer sounds SO DUMB that I think I might have to start watching it immediately. I also want to watch Tidying Up because there are a couple of drawers in my desk I literally haven’t opened in 5 years so I’m hoping it’ll inspire me to go through them and throw that shit out.

And as for bookish to TV suggestions… I just started watching Outlander (Amazon Prime), which is based on books. I haven’t read them. The show isn’t grabbing me as much as I thought it would, but the main guy is so hot (he looks v good in his kilt, which I did not realise was even possible) that I’m sticking with it for now. It’s about a lady who accidentally falls back in time to 17th century Scotland.
Also A Series of Unfortunate Events (Netflix)! I read the books when I was a kid and I love the series – it captures the feeling of the books perfectly and Neil Patrick Harris is great as Count Olaf.

    1. Hahaha Lucifer does sound dumb but IT’S JUST SO GOOD ❀ I promise you will love it, it's just ridiculous and over the top, and just everything *starry eyes* Let me know when you do, I'd love to fangirl with you!

Tidying Up is my go to show for when I want to relax and get in the mood for chores (which is hard) Best of luck with those drawers! πŸ˜›

I did start Outlander a few months ago and binged watched like crazy but I'm not even sure why it's so addictive? I mean, I liked it but I didn't feel super attached to it. The romance is not my thing either and I don't find Jamie anything special xD I know I'm in th minority but it's just how I feel… Maybe if he was more my type I'd want to watch it more πŸ˜‰

I did start that one as well! But I need a certain mood for it, I find it kind of depressing at times and I feel so sorry for those poor kids and mad at Olaf! Ugh, so mad. But I suppose that's the whole point. I like the show's aesthetic at times, but again I need to be in the mood for it (much like one needs to be in the mood for Tim Burton? At least in my case xD)

      1. I totally get what you mean about A Series of Unfortunate Events. It is depressing that if a new person you like is introduced you can pretty much guarantee it’s not going to end well for them!

I started watching Lucifer and I am so in, haha. A love a secretly nice supposedly evil guy. My only problem so far is the police lady’s kid – I understand maybe 1 in 3 things she says. I hope the situation will improve once her teeth grow in.

        1. Hahaha just like Game of Thrones! xD

Ooohh I’m so glad to hear it ❀ Lucifer is my absolute favourite show right now. The last episodes did get on my nerves a bit, though, so I stopped watching for now and will probably only return to them in April xD

Nothing to worry about, and I know things will get fixed, it's just annoying to keep watching and then not being able to get that turn of events at the end you know? So I'll stay clueless for a bit longer.

Trixie was soooo hard to understand at first, but thankfully she grew up a bit in season 2 (like, a LOT, it was a bit unsettling), including her teeth xD What bothers me about her is that she looks nothing like her parents and at first I was like "wait, is this like a plot twist or something??" But yeah, that was my greatest gripe with the show LOL

            1. I had to go online and see what was up! Apparently they had a different actor for Dan, one with dark eyes and darker skin, etc. But then went for this one. They felt the actress playing Trixie was so good, though, that they stuck with her. I think she’s the cutest too but that casting mishap stuck with me forever xD

    1. Thank you, Priasha! Yeah I think You has a lot to offer but it’s not for everyone (definitely not for those looking for a super serious thriller – it’s creepy than anything else to be honest). I hope you love it! πŸ™‚

  2. I’m glad you like You, I’ve seen on Netflix in the past few days and wasn’t sure if it would be good! And I’m also meaning to watch the tidying up show, I find cleaning and sorting kind of fun (sometimes) and some inspiration and motivation would be nice. Great post πŸ™‚ I didn’t know either of those shows were based on books.

    1. I wasn’t sure either and like I said, it took a bit of getting used to it until it finally did it for me. But now that I’ve finished the first season (not sure if there’s a second) I can safely say I really liked it πŸ™‚
Yeah me too! And Marie’s personality is so contageous, she brings this inner peace and positive energy that make you feel really good and pumped for change. At least for me, it did!
I didn’t know either but when I noticed the pattern I was like “this would be perfect for a post!” hahaha
Thank you, Charlotte ❀ I hope you love both shows!

  3. Oh I love Lucifer, the second I saw the trailer I was pretty much hooked and it’s such a fun show isn’t it? Tom Ellis is a great actor and he makes a great Lucifer too. πŸ™‚ I’m currently a little behind, I haven’t seen the latest season yet but I’m hoping it’s as good as the previous seasons.
There seems to be a lot of hype for You, maybe I should add that to my TBR list, but the only other show on this list I’ve seen is American Gods. I think you can tell I’m a fan of Neil Gaiman based on the fact that two shows I’ve seen are the two you’ve recommended for fans of Neil Gaiman. πŸ˜€
    Great post Sophie. πŸ™‚ ❀

    1. It is! Luci just cracks me up to the point where I’m holding on to my stomach, and my boyfriend too (and let me tell you, it’s hard for us to find any shows/movies in common so Lucifer must be special xD)
I’m almost finished with the third season, which I’m trying to avoid as I hate waiting for the forth one… Unfortunately, I’m not strong enough to stay away xD I end up watching two episodes every day and wanting more…
I didn’t actually see a lot of people mentioning You before, I just started it on a whim when it came up on Netflix. I watched the trailer and thought it could be interesting… Had no idea it was a book, though! At first it felt a bit like New Adult Pretty Little Liars, which I think is still the best description for it. I like creepy stalker stories so felt it would either be right up my alley or disastrous. It ended up being pretty good!
Yeeesss of course ❀ ❀ And I'm so glad you are, though who in their right mind isn't? xD The man is a genius, and everything he touches turns to gold in my experience. How do you find American Gods? I haven't watched it in forever, but I want to go back to it ASAP. I loved the story and writing but all the gore kind of got too much for me at one point and I have to step back ^^'
Thank you so much, Beth! ❀

      1. Just goes to show it really is an amazing show, and yes it has me laughing out loud to. I love it. I’m still way behind, to be honest I’m not even sure what episode/season I’m on anymore so I may need to just re-watch everything all over again from the very beginning.
I feel like I have way too many TV shows on my list that I need to get around to. No matter what I’ve heard about it I can’t add You onto the list until I’ve crossed some others off. I’m glad you enjoyed it though.
I really enjoyed American Gods, but I haven’t got all the way through the first season yet so I do need to go back into it (I get what you mean about the gore. It’s hard to watch too many episodes at once isn’t it?)
        That’s all right. πŸ™‚ ❀

        1. Hahaha well that’s a shame you have to re-watch it all again πŸ˜› Oh I know what you mean, I have a never-ending list myself!
I hope you enjoy You when you get to it πŸ™‚ It’s pretty great and creepy and all that good stuff!
American Gods is amazing and I need to get back to it, but it requires a certain mood…. And yes, I could have done without all of that but it makes the show all the more intense, which is good πŸ™‚

          Liked by 1 person

          1. I’m definitely not complaining. Any excuse to binge watch my favourite TV shows from the very beginning! πŸ˜€
Definitely, and I feel like no matter how good the show is American Gods isn’t one of those shows you can binge watch. Like you said it’s pretty intense! πŸ™‚

  4. omg im not a big tv show/movie watcher (my attention span gets lost when i watch but not when i read?? i’m a mess, i know) but YOU’VE ACTUALLY PIQUED MY INTEREST in some of these shows

did you say DARK COMEDY, NOW I NEED TO CHECK IT OUT!! i actually just recently read the anne of green gables book and now i want to watch the show so bad, anne is such a precious character, i could totally see her come to life. ‘tidying up’ is legit an attack against me and my always-messy-room, definitely keeping it on my radar.

this is such a fun idea, i totally love this post!!

    1. Hahaha I’m glad to hear that! Feels good to make you hyped about something you’re not usually hyped about πŸ˜€ *packs self in the back*

YES GIRL YES! It’s way darker than I thought, too, which I’m still deciding whether it’s a good thing or not? xD Probably is!

Anne is soooo precious OMG I love her ❀ I think I'll love her even more in the book. And Gilbert is so adorable too. I want to watch the older movie/series before I actually tackle the book. I don't know, I feel like I might have outgrown it… I'm not sure. And I'm a bit scared to find out ^^'

Tidying Up won't make you feel bad about yourself or your messiness! It'll probably just nudge you gently towards the light πŸ˜›

Thanks so much, May, I'm glad you liked it ❀

  6. Oh what a fantastic list! I’m planning to start Lucifer sometime, especially now that it’s on Netflix and I JUST started You. I had no idea it was based on a book. I’m about 4 episodes in and I love it so far πŸ˜€ Great acting and gorgeous to look at. Anne with an E is a total delight, though I still need to read the book myself. And I’ve been hoping to watch American Gods, but I’ve put it off since it isn’t on Netflix. But surprise, surprise, Azia didn’t know she had access to Prime Video until about a year ago, even though she’s had prime for 6 years LOL Now my watch list is massive, so American Gods will be in there someday haha. Tiding Up sounds so lovely. I watched the trailer but haven’t gotten around to it just yet. Think I might start it next week though! Great post Sophie! ❀

    1. Yes, please do!! It’s not on Netflix yet but it’ll be when the forth season airs in April (the show was cancelled while it was on Fox and now Netflix picked it up – I know, confusing but hey, great news! xD)
You was a pleasant surprise! I wasn’t too keen on it at first, felt too much like PLL, all drama and ridiculousness, but then it improved SO much. Like, I was seriously impressed. I don’t love the whole blurry edges effect they use on the show, which is the same they use for Sabrina and Riverdale WHICH *drum roll please* were actually created by the same people. I KNOW, it’s bonkers but true! To their credit, I think they’re getting better and better at this whole show thing xD But other than that, yeah, it does look really nice!
Azia you sneaky girl, you had Prime all along! So you can watch Lucifer AND American Gods and be happy forevermore ❀
Tidying Up will make you feel all fuzzy and nice inside! Marie is just adorable and so sweet and patient and kind and just, ugh, love the woman. The families can be a bit obnoxious and annoying at times but hey, reality TV needs a bit of drama after all.
Thanks so much, hon! I hope you enjoy the shows ❀ ^^

      1. If you’re talking about Lucifer then yeah it’s on Netflix! It’s got the first three seasons already 😁 I’ll probably start it after I finish the 9th season of Supernatural though.

Oh I know what you mean about those blurry edges. Yeah I don’t like them much either. I like my things to be in focus. But if you don’t focus on it too much then it kind of is not that noticeable. Kinda. And really?! I didn’t know they were the creators of both Sabrina AND Riverdale. Riverdale started off okay but has gone downhill since and Sabrina is actually really good too. And You is definitely the best so far. So yeah they’re really getting better at the TV show thing LOL

Wait, those two shows are on Amazon Prime as well?! Man I’ve been missing out on so much…

I can’t wait to start tidying up then. I love my cozy shows, like queer eye and the Great British baking show

        Of course! Thank you! ❀

        Like

        1. It is?? How have I missed it?? xD God, the fail… Anyway, thanks for letting me know hahaha

I don’t mind them for certain scenes where the character’s focus is also sort of messed up – I think the blurry effect does make sense there. But they started abusing it so much it just started making me nauseous xD

I think they’re the creators or producers or something. I know Riverdale and Sabrina share the same director/writer/crew, but I’m not sure about You. It is quite good! ^^

I do love baking shows too! I haven’t watched Queer Eye but everyone seems to rave about it so I guess I have to very soon πŸ˜‰

          Liked by 1 person

          1. Of course LOL XD ❀

Haha, it started going off the rails in some scenes. Thankfully, the acting was a good distraction lol

And yup! Did some digging. All three shows share the same producers! LOL, I guess the burred edges effect is their signature?

Yes! Pllease watch Queer Eye! It will make your day and make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside ❀

  7. Great list! I read Girlboss the book and Sophia comes across a lot more relatable – still a little annoying though. I think the tv show embellished her story for the drama.
That being said I think Nasty Girl went under? There were a number of issues with Amoruso mistreating staff and mismanaging the business. She used to be someone I looked up to – not anymore.

    1. Thank you, Sam! Oh that’s a relief… I was starting to think she WAS exactly as depicted, though I secretly hoped that wasn’t the case.
Yeah it did, and someone bought it off her? I think it was the guys behind Pretty Little Thing/Boo Hoo and the like. I was actually sad to hear about it because female entrepreneurs are my jam and I love to see them succeed for life. Not so much when they’re literally nasty people.
I still admire how much she accomplished, just not what she did to get there. I’ll have to give the book a go sometime!

    1. Join the club hahaha But I’m glad to have learned that before I finished them all, clueless. Lucifer is amazing ❀ You is also very, very good but do keep watching even if you don't like the first eps because it does get better.
I feel you, American Gods can be extremely weird at times but I found the show enjoyable so far. Not so sure if I'll ever read the book but I would like to.
I hope you love these if you do give them a go, Denise! πŸ™‚

  8. Oh, for once i know all the books and shows! πŸ˜€ Success moment here, hehe.
I just watched the Tidying up (haven’t read the book tho), and kinda came to the conclusion that this lady must have made a lot of money explaining the obvious to people. It was a fun show nevertheless.

I really want to watch You, but i also want to read the book first.

    1. Hahaha that’s unexpectedly cool? I’m glad to hear it!
You know, I think it’s one of those things where people just need someone to guide them and take them in the right direction. It’s like when you go to a psychologist, sometimes you know stuff but you need a little nudge to do it or realise what you need to do, no matter how simple or obvious πŸ™‚ And yeah, it’s fun!
You is great. I’m not sure if I’ll read the book or not but I look forward to hear what you have to say about it!

  9. Thanks for the recommendations, Sophie. I’m so tired of superheroes (my hubby’s choice) that I need to exercise my will and make a few picks of my own. This is the second post today that I saw about “You.” I’m going to start there. πŸ™‚

    1. No problem, Diana! Hahaha yeah I guess there are just too many superhero movies/shows nowadays, it can get kind of old after a while… So I very much appreciate the diversity!
You is great but it takes a while to fall in love with. It’s also not for everyone, especially if you’re looking for a more serious/old school thriller. This one is very light, I found. It’s more to do with relationships and explores mental disorders at the same time. I hope you love it! πŸ™‚

    1. Oh I feel you… I need to find new k-dramas to watch… But nothing seems to do it for me after Strong Girl Bong-Soon 😦 I just loved that show so much!

I love that about Marie – she gives you the tools and tips and allows you to find what you need and want yourself, at your own pace. She doesn’t impose anything, but people still end up so happy and their lives take such a dramatic turn, it’s amazing πŸ™‚

I hope you enjoy these, Dani! ^^

I only realised it when – one day – in small print – you blink and you miss it kind of thing – the words “based in characters created by Neil Gaiman etc etc” showed up at the bottom of the screen LOL

I all but ran to my phone to see where I could find this Neil Gaiman Lucifer they were talking about xD ❀

    1. Yeah, definitely keep watching! I started to enjoy it way more as the story progressed. Are you planning to read the book?

Marie Kondo is super nice, and to be honest she deserves all the hype πŸ™‚ Some of her teachings are a bit extreme for me, but I think the whole point is to take whatever works for you and adapt it to your lifestyle. I’ve already implemented some of her tips and have to say they work wonders.

      Thank you, Greg! ^^

  12. Eep, I discovered Lucifer last years and I LOVE it. Tom Ellis is amazing, and his portrayal of Lucifer is the best. I haven’t watched Season 3 yet but I’m trying to do it slowly so I don’t have too long to wait before season 4’s release πŸ™‚ I have to admit I didn’t realise it was based on a graphic novel!

I’m also intrigued by American Gods too (both the book and the TV series)

    Great post!

    1. I knooow I am so in love with him, I think it makes my boyfriend a tiny bit jealous hahaha (but seriously, that man walks into a scene and I’m swooning)

Season 3 wasn’t my favourite, especially towards the end as it felt like they were rushing things a bit and/or adding filler episodes and not really having a clear direction, in my opinion. I’m glad Netflix decided to pick it up, otherwise I would remain very unsatisfied xD

I didn’t either, it was such a pleasant surprise! I only realised it when I saw the tiny credits at the beginning of an episode saying it was based on characters from Neil Gaiman, etc. That piqued my interest right away!

American Gods is quite good, but brutal. I have to get back to it now that season 2 is a go πŸ™‚
