Reading Challenges

N.E.W.T.s Readathon

Hello everyone and happy Sunday! 😀

How are you all doing? Personally, I’m kind of sad because Halloween season is gone. BUT also happy because it’s now time for Christmas!

(Look, I know it’s only November but everyone knows Christmas time begins right after Halloween. IT’S A KNOWN FACT.)

Anyway, as you probably know, or might have seen in passing, back in September I had this loony idea of participating in the O.W.L.s Readathon hosted by G.

Things went super well, I sat all my O.W.L.s with flying colours, and actually ended up reading quite a few nice books! I also made some amazing friends ❤ But more on that later.

Now, as promised (and because I'm on a masochistic spiral apparently) I decided I would go ahead and do part 2: the N.E.W.T.s Readathon!

I’m not going to go into a lot of detail but do give G’s video a watch if you’d like to know more:

Thankfully, I won’t be alone in this quest as, again, these three lovely ladies have decided to take the pledge with me and continue on with this madness:

Steph @ Steph Loves

Lily @ Sprinkles of Dreams

Melissa @ Reading with Moose

Thank you sooooo much girls ❤ Without you I would probably never have made it to the end of the O.W.L.s. I’m so glad to have all of you for round 2 and I can’t wait to fire up our boards with anxiety-ridden glee 😀

Soooo this will be my TBR for this month: (click for full size)

After giving it a brief read through, you might have come to the same conclusion as I had back on a dark, stormy night: I will roughly be reading one book per day until the very end of November.

Yes, that’s right: ONE BOOK PER DAY.

You know what, that’s not an accurate description of what happened. HERE’S what actually happened:

After recovering from my mini mental breakdown, I took a deep breath and talked myself into seeing this as an opportunity to once again face life’s challenges and see where they led me.

(So progressively chill of me)

Now, I’ve chosen my books. I’ve raided the library. I’ve stocked up on my Kindle.

You will also notice that I have a lot of short stories, children’s books and graphic novels in there. And that’s because I am a strategist, people. I knew I needed some help getting through 36 FREAKING BOOKS IN 31 DAYS D: There was no other (sane) way to do it.

And I’m actually quite pleased with my choices, to be honest. I think they’ll be… Fun.

Anyway, I’ll try and keep you posted about my progress! I don’t know how often that’ll be – all I know is that I’ll make sure to signal you I’m alive under my pile of books in some way.

For now…

Thanks so much for reading and until next time!

  1. Of course Christmas comes right after Halloween: duhhhhh! Everyone knows that, I mean come on 😂😂
I don’t know if you made that Readathon document yourself, but it really looks amazing! It’s very ambitious though…wow! A book a day? I have trouble finishing a book a week lol 😂😂 Honestly though, I am currently reading a lot more than the whole year, and it’s great to be doing that again.
I’m glad that you have found a great way to challenge yourself, and I have faith in you! Goodluck with this: you can do it, but of course most importantly: have fun! 😊😊

    1. Of course!! 😂😂😂
I made it myself indeed hahaha Thank you very much! 😊 Yeah, well… They’re all short books/stories or graphic novels, so it’s not too bad. This way I don’t get bored and can alternate between both formats 🙂
I’m glad to hear it! I think it’s more of a habit than anything else… If we make sure to make time for reading everyday, we’ll be reading every day! It’s really that simple.
Thank you for having faith in me 😭😭😭 That means a lot. I’ll need all the help and prayers I can get!
I’m having fun so far, and I hope it stays that way 😊 It’s cool to challenge myself and see how many I can read and how fast. But also to read books that I probably would never think to pick up otherwise. And they ended up being pretty cool!
So yeah, thanks again for all your support ❤ ❤

      1. Haha, absolutely no problem! 😊😊 And it’s very cool t hear that you are having so much fun! 😊😊
I’m really looking forward to the end result and how many books you end up reading! Good luck, but knowing you, you probably won’t need it! 😊😊

  2. I can’t believe you’re going for everything!! 0.0 I am seriously rooting for you!

I am so happy to see The Little Prince on your list, it is such an amazing book, definitely one that everybody should read at some point. I can’t wait to hear about the others and doing this journey with you, though yours will be way more exhausting haha

    1. I am! It’ll probably be the death of me but I am 😂
I’ve already read that one (I think it was my first from the list, actually) and found it the most adorable thing ever, if also heartbreaking. I now understand why so many people have it as a favourite 😊
I don’t think it’ll be too exhausting! It just requires a bit of planning and mixing genres/formats a bit (otherwise, I’ll get too bored with just books or just graphic novels) and the fact that they’re all pretty short makes it much easier.
I wish you all the best of luck, Melissa!! Can’t wait to discuss our progress on our group ❤ 😀

    1. I’ve just finished The Lost Sisters, actually! It shed some light on what happened in The Cruel Prince and made me see the series a bit differently 🙂
Yes, Neil Gaiman!! I could not leave him out, especially when I’ve had The Sleeper and the Spindle waiting on my nightstand for AGES. It looks so gorgeous ❤
Thank you so much, lovely! So far so good, and I can only hope it'll get even better as I go 😊<3

    1. I knoooowww I might have lost my mind along the way 😂😂 But I just couldn’t bring myself to choose just a few subjects, that would have felt like not taking proper advantage of such a wonderful readathon!
Thank you so much, Raven! I’m looking forward to them too 😊 ❤

  3. Ok first! HI Sophie! Long time no see! I’ve been in a huge blog/reading slump but I’m starting to get back and visit all my favorite bloggers.

Second!!! OMG!lol! I give you tons and tons of credit a book a day? That’s super awesome and wishing you all the best.
I don’t participate in readathons, I feel like my anxiety would spike for some reason. Before the slump I read about 6, 7 books now I’m lucky if I get one done 😦
Hopefully, this month will be better. Wishing you all the best on this awesome readathon, can’t wait to see your updates (hopefully You’ll have time to do them haha)

Hope you have a lovely week ahead. 💋 xoxo

    1. Helena, it’s been so long! I hope you’re doing great despite your slump… I’ve missed your comments! ❤ And I need to go check your blog ASAP now that you're back 😀
Hahaha I know, I know, it's insane 😂😂😂 But it's also super cool and fun, and so far I'm right on schedule.
Oh no, that wouldn't be good at all! If you feel like you'd get anxiety from them, then definitely don't do it. I'm quite anxious myself but for some reason I don't feel this kind of pressure in a negative way. If anything, it occupies my mind and keeps me busy so I don't think about bad stuff. It also gives me a challenge/purpose for the day, which is both exciting and healthy for my self-esteem 🙂 Though everyone's different, and that might also change along the way for me. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
I sure hope you get to read more this month, though don't pressure yourself! Reading is supposed to be a fun and relaxing hobby 🙂 I'm looking forward to all the reviews and bookish content you'll post, as I know they'll be awesome!
As for my updates, they will probably be few, and very short and sweet 😁 Hopefully, they'll be entertaining enough hahaha
Have a lovely week yourself, doll! And so glad to have you back ❤ ❤

  4. I am wishing you so much luck with this readathon Sophie. One book per day this month is intense! Even when I don’t have other stuff going on in a month (like this month it’s NaNoWriMo so I’m trying to write 50K words as well as keep on top of blogging and reading) I can’t get a book read a day (my average is three or four per week).
You’ve picked some great books though. Alice in Wonderland is my favourite classic (and actually the only classic I’ve read I can say I enjoyed). Is that a reread for you or will it be the first time you’ve picked it up? Either way I hope you enjoy it. Also I love that you’ve got more of the Kate Daniels series and books by Philip Pullman on your list as well. 🙂
All in all seems like you’ve got some amazing books to get through. Good luck again and happy reading! 😀 ❤

    1. Thank you so much, Beth! 😊 I wish you all the best with NaNoWriMo! Now THAT’s intense 😀
I don’t read all that much per week either, but they’re all short stories/books/graphic novels, which I read quickly.
I started Alice in Wonderland at one point but never managed to finish it… I don’t know why! Though I’m definitely doing it now 😉 I can only hope to love it half as much as you!
Yeah, this Kate Daniels one is a bit different as it’s not Kate’s POV but I hope that won’t deter me from loving it as I did the previous ones 😊 (By the way, Ilona Andrews just published another book!) Pullman has never disappointed me before so I’m hoping this time won’t be any different 😉
Thank you lovely ❤ ❤ Let us both have wonderful Novembers 😀

      1. That’s all right, yeah NaNo is definitely intense but it’s such a lot of fun too and I’m really enjoying it so far. 🙂
Oh yeah, you can get through short stories and graphic novels a lot quicker can’t you? You’ll speed through your list in that case. I’ll keep my fingers crossed, either way I’ll be excited to see what you think of that one.
I feel like anything in the Kate Daniels series is something you’re guaranteed to love, and same goes for anything by Philip Pullman.
That’s all right, and yes for sure! 🙂 ❤️

    1. Hahaha thank you, Nicola! I’m pumped for it and have already read 9 books so far so I’m hoping I’ll manage to pass this challenge 😊
I think it all comes down to smart (short!) book choices and a bit of planning 😉 Anyone can do it!
Thank you so much, hon ❤ I'll need all the cheerleaders I can get 😂

  5. sophie doing another cool, unique readathon with fun prompts and amazing graphics?? which is also funny and entertaining because it’s a post from sophie??? christmas came early.

  6. Girl. You are absolutely insane. Seriously! Isn’t the point to earn ONE of the letters for each category, not ALL the letters?! XD I mean, I respect your ambition. I bow to your incredible coordination and extreme commitment to reading!

I love how you decorated your TBR into a scroll! That’s so fun. The fonts are lovely, too. I’m not all that into graphics, so it’s nice to see all your awesome graphics.

From your TBR, I really adore The Little Prince and The Sleeper and the Spindle. I noticed you picked quite a few shorter books, so I look forward to hearing how things go! Will you be writing mini reviews for all these you read?! That seems like SO MANY REVIEWS.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hahaha actually the letters are meant to be levels so that you start at A, E and then O. O being the highest level and A the lowest. You can either do none of them or all of them or just reach the mid-level, but you have to do it in sequence (which, I admit, I have not done 😂 But yeah, it’s meant to mimic the Harry Potter grades and how if you “study” (aka read) more you achieve a higher grade 🙂 And because I’m an overachiever, I want to achieve the highest grade in all the subjects 😂

Thank you so much! I have so much fun doing them and of course I could not do a HP related post without some Hogwarts letter action 😛

So far so good! I’ve read 14 books, all of which I fairly enjoyed… Which amazes and scares me at the same time! I hope I continue to love each and every one of them, but I fear my luck is coming to an end 😂 I did like The Little Prince but not as much as I hoped. I think I’m too old for it now 😦 But I’m very curious about The Sleeper and the Spindle as Gaiman as never let me down before! I have another book of his, The Dream Hunters, on my list as well ^^

I will not be posting the individual reviews, no, but they are all on Goodreads and I will be linking them on whatever posts I make on the readathon 🙂 But if you want to check them out beforehand, they’re on my profile 😉

      1. Wow. Good job committing to your OWLs, then! I understand why the readathon would be so massive if we’re mimicking studying. Buckle up, girl! This is an INTENSE readathon! XD You must be a Ravenclaw. 😉

Wow! 14 books already! I am quite impressed. Do you have a favorite of your first 14? Be careful to leave a few books you know you’ll love for the middle and end of the road. I have gotten burned with readathons in the past by forgetting to do this… there’s nothing worse than only having books you aren’t all that interested in reading at the end of the readathon!

I definitely respect not posting individual reviews. I don’t post reviews for all the books I read on my blog either. Thank goodness for Goodreads, hm? I’ll be stalking your profile the rest of this month. Good luck, Sophie!!

        Liked by 1 person

        1. Hahaha yes! I do feel like I’m back at school… Which is strangely nice and exciting, but only because the “subjects” are cool 😛
I’m actually a Gryffindor! So it makes sense I would get myself in such a mess 😂😂😂
I’m not sure of favourites but I did love The Light Princess and Nausicaa the most 😊
That’s actually great advice! Thanks for reminding me because I did start with the easiest/cooler ones but now I’ve gone back and followed a more set pattern so as to make sure that doesn’t happen 😉
I think it’s just easier for everyone involved to go and read the reviews on GR if they so wish, rather than write a huge post with them that will likely bore everyone 😂
Hahaha thanks! I hope you enjoy your time there 😁 And thank you!! ❤️❤️

          Liked by 1 person

          1. Ahh, a Gryffindor would certainly think nothing of overcommitting like you chose to do. XD Well done, Gryffindor – good job staying true to your house!

I hope that the pattern you’ve set for yourself will keep your reading on track. I cannot believe we’re halfway through November already! GASP! Where did the time go?!

Good luck, Sophie! I’ll be cheering you on from the sidelines. 🙂

I knooooowwww 😭😭😭 I feel like there’s so little time left in my readathon and I still have a mountain of books to go through… Oh well. I’ll manage somehow 😂

Thank you, Jackie!! That means a lot, I’ll need all the cheering I can get haha ❤ ❤

    1. Hahaha either ambitious or crazy or both… Either way, I’m sticking to my plan and crossing my fingers I’ll manage to read all 36 books by the end of this month 😀

Thank you! I wanted to give that Hogwarts letter feel that we all love and cherish… And as for Monstress, I hope I enjoy it just as much as you 😊 (I’m in love with the artwork already, so only waiting for the story to sweep me off my feet as well!)

Again, thank you so much Alicia ❤

        1. The only one I’ve read of those so far was Poisoned Apples and I actually wasn’t a big fan… Though that’s likely because I’m not a fan of poetry, period. I do like the themes behind it and what the author came up with but otherwise not impressed…
I seriously hope I’ll enjoy the others more!
