3 Halloween Shows I’m Dying to Watch (Perfect for Scaredy Cats)

Hiya and happy Sunday everyone!

I know I know… This post isn’t about books? What’s happening here?!

But hear me out: these TV shows are so Halloween worthy you will want to take a break from spooky literature and watch the heck out of them. (*gasp* SHE SAID WHAT?)

If you’re like me and can’t watch horror to save your life, then I present you three alternative shows that are not terribly scary but still perfectly adequate for this dark and ominous season.

(And yes, that is a horrible pun in the title. I’m a cheesy person, okay?)

Good Omens (Amazon Prime)

This is not a secret: I LOVE Neil Gaiman’s books. I read Good Omens with my book club back when I had one and everyone fell in love with the characters and the wacky plot. I didn’t have a chance to write a review for it yet but to be honest, I’m not sure I can!

Both Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett wanted to turn Good Omens into a show for the longest time but never could. Gaiman then decided he would honour his friend and co-writer by finally bringing it to life. Doesn’t that just break your heart and make it whole again?

Besides, the very best Doctor (David Tennant) stars in it. Who else could pull off the coolest demon on Earth? No one, that’s Who. (*giggles*)

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix)

Do you love shows like Riverdale, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and American Horror Story? Well then, my friend, this sounds like the perfect fit for you.

I used to love Sabrina the Teenage Witch growing up, and I also managed to watch a bit of the cartoon (which, by the way, was adorable). So when this show was announced, I was over the moon to revisit one of my favourite childhood characters!
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina definitely has nothing to do with those, though. I mean, besides the characters and the general storyline.

Instead, it’s a dark twist on what Sabrina could be if someone had decided that friendly witches were actually cannibal Satan worshippers.

Fun, right?

The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell (Netflix)

This is a Halloween-themed cooking show featuring puppets, a Gomez/Morticia-like couple and the hottest dark aesthetic ever. I don’t know what else I can tell you.

Besides the obvious educational component, this show sounds so darn cute and creepy I think anyone (even those who turn up their nose at Bake Off) will probably love it.

If you had any doubts I would include this here, then I have to ask you: have you even looked at my blog? I live for sweets!

  1. Haven’t seen any of them (yet) but out of all these the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina sounds like the one I would like the most 😊 Well, as you know I love horror (no really…duh….😂😂) and Netflix really has a couple of great things to offer in this season. I’m also very much looking forward to the haunting of hill house, which looks great too. Perfect shows to watch this season, that’s for sure! 😊😊

    1. I’m not sure which one I’ll like more but Sabrina definitely has the nostalgia factor going for it 😉 I’ve heard great things about The Haunting of Hill House but I, the ever wimpy one, will probably not be able to stomach it 😂 I do hope you enjoy it though!

Let me know what you think of these if you happen to watch them 🙂 I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  2. I… reaaaally need to pick up my dusty copy of Good Omens before that show begins. I’m really excited about it and can’t wait to find out what the book has in store for me! 😮 Also love that Sabrina is featured here. I actually used to watch Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a kid, and to see this new series based on the original comic book series is really exciting. I feel like it might actually turn out surprising good too! If there’s a scary show that’s meant to be scary and that was recently released that also seems pretty good, I’d say The Haunting of Hill House! I’d pay billions of dollars to get a live reaction video of you watching that hahahaha 😀 Great post, Sophie!

    1. YES YOU DO 😮😮😮 I admittedly do not remember as much about it as I wanted to as it’s been a long while and my memory sucks (thus, I should have written the review!) but I remember liking it a lot so that’s enough for me hahaha I’ve heard the show goes a different way too so in theory it should appeal to both readers and non-readers 🙂

Are you planning on reading the Sabrina comic books? As I was reading your comment I was like “wait, Lashaan would probably like them!” so yeah, I’m curious to hear your opinion now hahaha They’re supposed to be preee-tty creepy but I have yet to check them out.

Oh I’ve heard about The Haunting of Hill House… And you can hold on to your money mister, because I’m not watching THAT any time soon!! 😂 I like to keep my blood pressure stable, thank you very much 😂😂😂

Thank you for your kind words, as always ❤

      1. I do want to give that graphic novel a shot. I believe it’s just one book too. But I can’t say when I’d get around to it though hahah

Oh man!! How about a lot of chocolate? Would that get you to watch The Haunting of Hill House? Or maybe even American Horror Story? 😀

  3. I can’t wait to see Good Omens!!! I have to admit, I didn’t actually like the book very much. I personally found it quite hard to understand. But I am hoping that watching it might make more sense for me. Also, Sabrina looks so good, I will have to give it a go!!

  4. I cannot wait for Good Omens! 😍😍 I did not read the book, though but I WILL! I might watch the 1st episode of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina by curiosity, but I’m wary because I REALLY don’t like Riverdale. It was okay the 1st season, now it’s just ridiculous. (If you love it, I’m sorry. Don’t hate me. 💛)

      1. Oh you need to read it!! It’s quite cool and wacky and just a fun story about the apocalypse you know? 😂

Oh I feel the same way about Riverdale… I used to LOVE it and binge watch it like crazy but then it got so cheesy and stupid I kind of lost interest. I haven’t watched it in a while now so I have no idea if it’s gotten better or worse but I feel much more confident about Sabrina (despite the fact that the crew is the same…) Oh well, fingers crossed it doesn’t suck!!

Thank you so, so much Morgane! You’re too sweet ❤ ❤

        1. Oh, I think Riverdale is worse than ever! I used to watch a few minutes to see if I was missing out, but the musical episode was so ridiculous that I thought « I’m definitely missing nothing! » I’m good public generally. It’s rare that I stop what I started, so that must be awful. 🙃

I’m still curious to see what they did with Sabrina! Hopefully, it’ll be good!

          1. Ah well, I’m glad not to have bothered then hahaha
I usually binge watch a lot of eps in a day/week and then either continue religiously or drop it all of a sudden. Not because I don’t like it, just because I kind of forget about it? xD Or it just hasn’t updated in a while? I don’t know.

I’ve jus tried Sabrina recently and so far, not-Riverdaly at all! I found it much more mature, the humour was genuinely much funnier and it was creepy and gory enough without making me squeamish. Everything I wish Riverdale had been T_T

But Riverdale kind of lost itself in all the high school drama and just lost its appeal altogether. I’m not sure what will happen to Sabrina along the way but so far so good 🙂 I highly recommend it!

            1. I used to watch religiously, then I don’t know, it was so messy. I’d be curious to know what they were thinking in the writing room, really. BUT! I watched the 1st episode of Sabrina and so far so good! ( the blurs make me sea-sick though, but oh well. ) I’m genuinely surprised! 🙂

              1. Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that. I was a bit taken aback by them and even my boyfriend was like “are they doing it on purpose or are they just bad filmmakers?” LOL I think it’s a cool effect but it does take a bit getting used to.
I hope you enjoy the rest of the series! I am so far 😀

  5. Amazing post and just what I needed!! 🙂 I cannot watch horror movies at all, so I usually go just for a little spooky 😄 I’m definitely planning on watching the Sabrina Netflix show!! And I had no idea that there would be a spooky baking show, must. watch 😍 I’m so excited for Good Omens!!! … I have not read the book, but I know that I’ll like it and I really should get around to reading it 😀

    1. Hahaha I’m glad to be of help! I wish there were more posts like these so I could enjoy Halloween without suffering a panic attack LOL

Sabrina and Good Omens sound terrific. I’m still not sure about The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell as it can easily spiral into something totally cheesy and silly but I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

You absolutely must read it!! It’s quite the fun story and Gaiman wrote it so… Enough said ❤

  6. This is the perfect post for me Sophie, because I am a massive scaredy-cat and I’ve admitted it before this too, but I actually have two of these shows already on my to-watch list. 😀
I have been eagerly awaiting the premiere of Good Omens since it was announced (I already have Amazon Prime but if I hadn’t I would have got it for that show alone). I really loved the book and the trailer looks amazing so hopefully that will mean this adaptation lives up to it.
Also Sabrina the Teenage Witch was a major part of my childhood so I’m really excited for this new take. Still I want to try and watch Riverdale before watching the series (I know the shows aren’t technically sequels to one another but I always have to do things in order. This is just a fact about me.)
Great post, and I hope you enjoy these shows as well. 😀 ❤️

    1. Hahaha I’m glad to be of help, Beth! I wish more people wrote posts like these so I could enjoy more Halloween shows 😂

Yeah Good Omens looks totally worth it! I heard they are taking a different direction from the book, too, so I’m excited to find out about the changes 🙂 Since Gaiman himself wrote it, I’m confident it will be just as amazing as the book was ❤

I used to love Riverdale but it eventually got too ridiculous even for me 😂 So I dropped it and haven't watched it since. I'm nervous because the crew for Sabrina is supposed to be the same (same director, writer and producers, at least) sooooo fingers crossed they don't ruin it like they did Riverdale. Admittedly, it's a very different type of story but it's still a risk.

So I wouldn't bother too much with Riverdale, to be perfectly honest. I think the only time they cross over is in the comics and it was already revealed that the shows will stay separate, unfortunately. I think it would have been fun! But yeah. Definitely don't keep yourself from trying Sabrina if you don't enjoy Riverdale! Both are worth a go.

Thank you so much, Beth! I hope you do too so we'll hopefully be able to fangirl together 😀 ❤

      1. I guess there just needs to be more Halloween shows that aren’t full of blood and gore. Then we could enjoy more of them.
It seems like Gaiman has been very involved in the whole process, which yeah does make me thing it will be good. This should be one adaptation which does live up to the book! 😀 Well the trailer for Sabrina looks amazing, and I haven’t seen Riverdale but it’s on my watch list so I’ll probably still get around to it either way (I guess I’ll see when I actually do get around to it.) Don’t worry either way I won’t let it spoil me for Sabrina. Even if I decided to skip Riverdale all together Sabrina is a must!
That’s all right, and yes for sure! 😀 ❤

  7. I can’t wait for Sabrina and The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell! This Halloween season has so many good shows coming. American Horror Story is also a great Halloween watch if you haven’t gotten into it yet!

    Like

    1. Definitely! These were the less scary ones I could find but there’s tons of good shows/movies premiering and I’m excited to find more I’ll be able to enjoy 🙂

American Horror Story sounds a bit too much for me, but I might give it a go in the future! Thanks for the rec 😊 ❤

  8. ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ looks amazing! I used to love ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ when I was a kid so this is now a must watch when it’s released 🙂
I have a weird relationship with horror. I love watching it…but I scare myself absolutely stupid. My boyfriend and I are currently watching ‘American Horror Story’ and I literally watch most of it from behind his hands (because apparently I feel safer covering my eyes with his hands?). Somehow I’ve made it onto season two 😛

    Like

    1. Same here! Hahaha that’s just so adorable I can’t even 😂 I get scared from the sound alone (maybe even more than watching it!) so I wouldn’t be able to cheat like that 😛

If that’s the case then I’ll probably never try that show… I was under the impression it was creepy rather than full-on scary!

    1. Hahaha that’s the spirit!! I will probably also lock myself home one weekend and binge watch the heck out of it while ignoring concerned messages from loved ones 🙈

I’ve never watched Mad Men but boy, she’s indeed the cutest ❤ I've heard she drew inspiration from the show and her fellow actresses to play Sabrina!

  9. Something tamer please! So thank you for sharing this with us Sophie as you are saving my behind and let me enjoy the spooky fear in a softer way 😉

  10. I, like so many bloggers have mentioned above, also love Good Omens! I’ve probably read it 6+ times by now… But I’ve also never written a review for it! I always freeze when I’m set up against a book that I absolutely adore to review. I just cannot seem to do it. O_o

I don’t watch TV, but you can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be watching Good Omens when it is released! Yes, ma’am!

    Like

    1. Wow, that’s a lot of re-reads! I can’t re-read to save my life, no matter how amazing the book is… But I do need to do that with Good Omens before the show premieres as I’ve forgotten most of it by now.

Hahaha, that’s the spirit! I hope you enjoy it as much (or even more, if possible) as the book 🙂 I know it’s hard but Gaiman himself wrote it so I find very little can go wrong with it!

      1. I don’t do a ton of re-reading now, but when I was younger I re-read my favorite books quite a bit. Two of my re-reads are from the last two years when I had different book clubs pick these books. I don’t mind re-reading for book club! XD

Exactly! I am optimistic. I’m also curious if Gaiman will change some things to make them easier to ingest via television. I know changes were made to American Gods to improve the TV-ness of the series (not that I watched it; FAR too gory for me).

        Like

          1. American Gods is definitely a slow burn of a novel. Things take their time happening. Plus, Shadow is on the edge of the action most of the time, just sitting around waiting for his next order. So, we do a lot of waiting and watching with him. This is important to know before you pick up the book — I’ve heard the show moves at a MUCH faster pace.

            Like

            1. Oh yeah, the show moves at lightning speed! xD Sometimes things get confusing because of that, since there’s no information for the audience to digest at first, but I prefer it to having to wait around for things to happen.
Thanks for the heads up, though! 🙂

  11. I haven’t heard of any of these to be honest. There are some movies I like to watch for Halloween though. Blackbeards Ghost, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and Halloween Town and Hocus Pocus. And there are a few walton episodes that have a spooky feel to them.

  12. I used to love Sabrina growing up too! And I also usually can’t handle horror movies, but there’s a great New-Zealand one called ‘Housebound’ that I watched not so long ago on a recommendation – it managed to be both incredibly scary and incredibly funny at the same time, which made it easier to watch 🙂

    Like

      1. Ah yes I’ve seen that show too!! It’s very funny 🙂 Housebound has pretty similar humour (I love NZ humour!) though it is actually scary/tense in parts – nothing terrible but I still wouldn’t watch it alone 🙂 It also has some gore/blood, but because it’s humorous and over the top I found those bits more funny than scary. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it!!
