Reading Challenges

O.W.L.s Readathon

Aaaand I’m back, beautiful people!

It’s true, I have been gone for quite a while and many of you may have assumed I was either dead or done with blogging (except those who follow me on Twitter – which, by the way, we should totally follow each other on Twitter). To everyone else, my apologies. You guys rock if you’re still around ❤

Now, I have an announcement to make: I am going to participate in a Readathon.

I KNOW. I never take part in readathons because I’m a complete mess and can never follow through. BUT I saw this one going around and suddenly felt the pull – not to mention the absolute need to catch up on my Goodreads challenge, which looks absolute dire right now. So yeah, readathon. (Read-a-Thon?)

Unfortunately, this specific readathon actually happened during the month of April… I only found out about it because I saw people mentioning the N.E.W.T.s Readathon, which is taking place right now. So I was like “Oh ****, it’s over. Now what?!” And then I thought “I’M A GRYFFINDOR DAMMIT. And Gryffindors don’t follow the rules!”

So, bottom line: I’m going to do it anyway.

This is the original video by Book Roast:

Besides being the cutest, she came up with this glorious idea and managed to gather all the Potterheads in one place! If that is not one awesome accomplishment, I don’t know what is.

You should watch the video to get a better understanding of what the rules are but basically it works just like a normal readathon: you choose a book for each category / school subject and try to read as many as you can in order to complete the challenge.

Make sure to read your Hogwarts letter as well as it explains what each subject entails!

The books I chose: (click on it for full size)

I’m thinking it’d be cool to try the O.W.L.s in September and maybe continue with the N.E.W.T.s in November (I’m reserving October for Halloween reads).

I also thought it’d be so much more fun to do this with other people! Most have already done it but I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s missed the announcement somewhat or just wasn’t able to do it in August. (Tell me I’m not the only one, PLEASE)

So yeah, guys, I’m inviting you all to take this challenge with me. We’ll be the late bloomers but as long as we’re all having a good time, it’s no big deal! It also starts on the 1st of September and ends on the 30th so you have plenty of time to prepare.

I might create a Goodreads group for us if more people want to join me. We could all chat, check up on each other’s progress from time to time, get suggestions, ideas, etc. So let me know if you’re up for it and if you’d like to be added to the group! Even if you’re not sure you’ll be participating, you can still take part 🙂

So what do you say? Are you guys ready for one magical readathon?

Let me know if you want to do this Readathon with me! You can either leave a comment below or DM me on Goodreads 🙂
I’d love to chat even if you’re not participating too! ❤

    1. Thank you, Mandy! ❤️❤️ Ah yeah I’m very curious about Paranormalcy to be honest. It sounds pretty cool 🙂
I have read the Percy Jackson books before so I know what to expect. I’m intrigued about what the author comes up with for an encyclopedia type of book, though.
Thanks so much for reading, hon! 😊

  1. Welcome back! ❤ 🙂
This read-a-thon seems like so much fun! Especially if you love Harry Potter, which I assume most of us do. 😉 I won't be able to participate, mostly because I'm preparing for my final exams during September so I won't have that much free time. Anyway, good luck with the read-a-thon and I hope you manage to read a ton! 😀

    1. Thank you, Anna! ❤
Oh that's completely understandable, and even though I'm sad that you won't be joining in I also know real life takes priority! I wish you the best of luck then 😀
I guess this readathon counts as exams too so I'll have one very daunting month ahead as well xD
      Thanks so much, hon! ^^

  2. Well, as I already said: it’s so good that you are back! 😊😊
Looks like you have a real challenge ahead of you, and those are really a large number of books. That said: I know you can pull it off. As for me, I would love to participate, but I just don’t have the time to read this many books (as much as I would love to😊😊). But I will be looking forward to your posts for this: good luck!! 😊😊

    1. D’oh – you’re the greatest! *big hug*
I do and I usually don’t go for this type of thing but I thought “what the heck!” and just went for it hahaha
Thanks so much for the vote of confidence – I don’t know if you’re being overly optimistic but I appreciate it nonetheless 😂 I need all the luck I can get!
As for not being able to do it – aw that shucks. But I totally understand, life gets in the way! I hope mine will give me a bit of rest at least for now so I can get some reading done 😊 And I hope you get to try a readathon in the future! They can be loads of fun.
      Thank you!!

      1. Oh no, not being overly optimistic at all: Just being realistic, and having faith in you! 😊😊 Because I KNOW you can do this!
Haha..yeah, I have a lot of things planned for my own blog as well the upcoming month. But maybe, who knows, one day when I have a little more time on my hands, I can join in 😊😊
You are welcome, and I hope you will have fun with this 😊😊

I look forward to having you join a readathon in the future! I’m sure you’d like it 🙂
Thanks so much, and best of luck with your posts!

  3. This sounds absolutely amazing. I’ve written the OWL subjects down, and I’m going to look at my book shelf and see if I can participate in this readathon. Thank you so much for sharing this. It sounds amazing 🤓 x

  4. I admire people entering readthon Sophie! I am a mood reader especially these days and I could never “force” me to read books on command. I even decided to tone it down on the ARCs and only accept 2 per month 😉 And I am on Twitter but it’s the social media I am the least active on!

    Like

    1. I’m actually a mood reader myself so this is my first big challenge! I’m very hesitant about it but I’ll do my best 😊
One should definitely set boundaries and do what’s best for them. Not everyone is a speed reader or h. I enough time for everything. That doesn’t mean they’re not as good as all the other bloggers!
I commend you on your decision to cut down ARCs – very sensible! I should do something similar hahaha
I think I follow you on Twitter already… What’s the social media channel you’re most active in?

  5. Welcome back, Sophie, it’s great to read a new post from you, you’ve been missed around here ❤ ❤
I wish you the best of luck for this readathon! I am not a fan of doing readathons personally, but I hope you'll suceed with that one 😀 I love your choices of books here, especially Legend and Lyra's Oxford, ahhhhhhhhh. Loved that one ❤

    1. Aaww thanks Marie! It’s lovely to be back and I missed you all so much as well, especially my blogging friends like yourself ❤️❤️❤️ You all make my days so much more fun!
Thank you so much! That’s understandable, I’m not a big fan myself but I decided to try it at least once to see how it goes 😊 I probably will fail miserably but it’s not a big deal hahaha
OMG really? I’ll make sure to read those first then! Can’t wait 😄

  6. Oh welcome back Sophie, and good luck with this readathon! 😀 I hope you enjoy Magic Bites, that’s a favourite series of mine though it definitely improves with the second book, just an FYI in case you’re not a major fan of it. Also Legend is a great pick, anything by Marie Lu is a winner in my opinion. 🙂
Great post, and again good luck with the readathon. I feel it’s definitely appropriately Gryffindor to do this one without having done the NEWT challenge! 😀 ❤

    1. Aaww thanks Beth! ❤️ I’ve heard amazing things about it and I think it’s one of those series I wouldn’t pick up by myself because of two reasons: the cheesy cover and the cheesy plot. Seriously, that book is not doing a good job at selling itself! But I’m glad Goodreads and other channels exist so I can get some real recs from real people 😊
Marie Lu needs no introduction really! Have you read her Warcross series? I can’t wait to try that one as well.
Thanks so much hon! I definitely need all the help I can get 😅 Hahaha indeed! The NEWTs actually come after but I’m late for both challenges so I’m double breaking the rules 😂
I’m curious though, what’s your house?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. The cheesy cover doesn’t do it any favours, but it’s a good book and good series in spite of the covers so I’ll keep my fingers crossed you love it. Ha, Goodreads if great for recommendations isn’t it?
Yeah, Warcross is actually my favourite by her, if you haven’t read it yet I’d highly highly recommend it.
Eh, sometimes rules are made to be broken, and my house is Hufflepuff, which was to the surprise of no one who knows me in real life! 😀

        Like

        1. I hope so too! Bad covers will sometimes hide wonderful books so I’m not surprised 😉 It is!
Ah awesome to hear! I need to read it soon so I can see what the fuss is about hahaha
Oh I don’t know you in real life but I could definitely tell you were in Hufflepuff as well 😊 My boyfriend is a Hufflepuff too! All Huffles I know are amazingly kind and sweet people who make everyone else feel really happy just being around them so yeah, no surprises there ❤️
(There’s a new batch of Hufflepuffs around that resulted from the Fantastic Beast’s hype and not from the quiz itself and those I don’t consider to have the same qualities, though)

          Liked by 1 person

          1. Yeah it’s why I shouldn’t judge books by their cover (but I still do, I don’t think I’m ever not going to be able to I’m afraid).
Ha, yeah it seems my Hufflepuff nature is one that proceeds me everywhere. I guess it just goes to show the quiz is accurate, and given we have Newt Scamander in our house in my opinion it’s the best house too. (I don’t either, but I can kind of see why because I love that film and I love Newt!) 😀 ❤

  7. Welcome back! It’s so good to hear from you again!

I’ve been wanting to participate in a Read-a-thon but always seem to hear about them too late, so would love to read along with you for this. Can’t wait to read along with you!

Same here hahaha It happened again with this one but I didn’t let that keep me from taking part anyway.
And yay, the more the merrier!! I’m really glad you could join, and I look forward to seeing what books you choose and your progress 😉

  8. It’s lovely to see you back! Omg do I see a Ruby Oliver book on there?! I love those books so much. Omg I haven’t read them since my actual teens. I should pick them up again! E Lockhart is one of my favourite YA authors.

    1. Hahaha yes! It’s going to be my first of hers and I thought since it seems like a really light and quick read would be perfect for a readathon 😊
I will definitely want to talk to you about it after I read it! I hope I enjoy it as much as you 😀

  9. Oh, I love this tag (HP being my childhood, and all), and you’re making me want to join this readathon so badly, especially since it’d be my first one, and I absolutely adore the theme.

Good luck with it & I hope you enjoy the books you picked! (I adore the Legend series, and it gets better with each book!) ❤

    1. Me too! That’s why I couldn’t pass the chance to do this one 😁
Thanks so much, lovely! ❤️ I hope so too as I know very little about them but they all seem quite popular for the most part 😊
You can still totally join if you want, it only starts tomorrow! Let me know if you do and I’ll add you to the group. It’ll be super fun, I promise 😉

        1. Hahaha yay!!! I can’t wait to have you on-board if you do find them 😁
Yes, indeed! Though you will only be able to sit the N.E.W.T.s for the subjects you were able to accomplish on your O.W.L.s – so if you happen to fail Transfiguration in your O.W.L.s you won’t be taking the Transfiguration challenge next. Does that make sense?
Anyway it’s still totally up to you which ones to do or not and whether you’ll want to sit your N.E.W.T.s next 😊

          Liked by 1 person

    1. I’m actually a very slow reader as well but I decided to challenge myself and see where it leads 🙂 Maybe you should do the same! There’s still time ^^ If not this one, then any other readathon you like, in your own time – it’s actually way more fun than nerve-wrecking hahaha
Thank you so much, Aimee! ❤️ Several people have recommended those to me too, which makes me really excited to get to them soon 😁

  10. Ahhhh, you’re back!!!!! *Showers you with chocolates* 😆 This looks so fun! I joined a readathon too, and I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep up, but I love it! Best of luck to both of us 💕 So happy to have you back, and yay for rule-breaking Gryffindors! 😆

    1. Yessss!! *opens mouth as wide as I can to catch every single one of them, trying not to choke in the process*
It is super fun! 😀 Oh which one did you join? I wasn’t a big fan of these things but now that I’ve tried it it’s kind of exciting xD
Thanks so much, hon ❤ And Gryffindors are the best for sure! 😀 Hahaha

  11. It’s nice to meet you (since I really just started book blogging in May). Looks like you’ll be reading one of my favorite books (Legend) for the readathon. I’ll be working on finishing one of my Legend fanfics this month (and maybe next). I won’t be participating because my TBR is pretty full for the month already, but good luck!

    1. Aw, it’s lovely to meet you as well, Brooke! ❤ Welcome to the blogging community, I hope you're having fun exploring the place 🙂

Oh that's awesome! Tons of people have recommended it to me so I'm excited 😀

I completely understand, and you can obviously join in at any time – I decided to do it now when it happened way back in April hahaha So yeah, no rules here!

Thanks so much, and happy reading ❤

  12. I spot some really great books for the readathon at least! Especially an Asimov book! 😀 Hopefully you’ll complete the challenge with ease and enjoy the whole experience as well. I personally could never join one because of my reading speed hahahah I’m glad you’re still giving this a shot and hope it’ll turn out to be fun! Happy reading, Sophie! 😀

    1. Hahaha thank you, Lashaan! If you say so, I believe you since you have impeccable taste 😛
I’ve read so much about Asimov and watched the movie, so I’m confident I will like it. Hopefully. Please make it so! xD
I definitely want to have fun and plan things carefully so I don’t start panicking all of a sudden when I run out of time. So far so good! I’m a reeeeally slow reader, trust me, so if I’m giving this a shot you definitely can too 😀
Thank you so much, and you too! ❤

    1. Thank you, Caro! Aw, that’s so cool 😀 They’re so much harder than the OWLs for sure… I’m both excited and nervous for them xD

Thanks so much, hon ❤ That means a lot, and I did have fun with it (although it did take a while and made me want to bang my head on the desk a few times xD) But I did like the end result 🙂

That’s so sweet of you, Jackie ❤ ❤ I'm doing well so far 😀 And even though I'm sad to not have you on board I look forward to your other posts!

I watched the movie and thought it was great, so I'm excited for the book! It's quite out of my comfort zone 🙂 Thank you again for stopping by!

      1. This is what it means to be a voracious reader. We have to sacrifice some reads and some projects to make room for others. It’s amazing and wonderful, though. I love knowing I have the flexibility to make these decisions. It’s empowering!

I haven’t seen the film; I hear it’s based on one of the stories but not the collection as a whole. I’ll have to watch I, Robot and find out for myself!

  14. I’m finally dipping into the HP series! It always warms my heart to see HP fans gushing over the series. I’m only on the third book but I can see now why the series is so beloved. I hope you have fun on your readathon!

    1. Ah that’s so great, Azia! I’m glad you’re enjoying it 🙂

Some people find it difficult to get into it after they’re past being a kid but tons of adults fall for HP everyday so I’m happy to hear you belong to the latter ❤

Thank you so much, hon, and I hope you love the rest of the series! PoA and OotP are my favourites ^^

      1. I was so happy that I loved it too. I was so worried that I might be too old for it, but HP is genuinely the kind of story written for all ages! It’s so clever but also fun and magical.

Of course! ❤ I hear that PoA is a lot of people's favorite. I haven't gotten very far into it, so I'm really curious to see what goes on!

    1. No, you’re totally not late! You can still do it if you want to, but in case you’d like more time (aka the full month) feel free to do it at any time.

The girls and I are having a blast at our GR group so let me know if you’d like to join us. We’ll be doing our NEWTs in November hopefully 😊

      Liked by 1 person

  15. I actually did the OWLs readathon in August when everyone was doing NEWTs. I was going to do it in September but I didn’t get motivated enough and kinda left it alone. I was going to do it in October but since you decided to do in November, I want to do it with you guys! Maybe I’ll get more motivated to read it! I would love to be in the group chat!

    Like

    1. Ah that’s so cool! You’re a rule breaker too then hahaha *high five*
I always like to make October all about spooky and Halloweenesque reads so I wasn’t about to break tradition – thus November it is! ^^
I’m not sure if I’ll create a separate group for the N.E.W.T.s as it probably won’t have the same people, but either way I’ll add you as soon as it’s decided! 🙂
It’s great to have a new member, and I’m so excited (and nervous) to start the new readathon! This one was brutal enough and it was only 12 books 😂😂
I hope you’ll get more motivation this way ❤ I know it certainly helped me!
