Hey everyone! So apparently I’ve been missing for a month? I’m so sorry! 😭 I’ve just had a crazy few weeks (unsurprisingly) but I hope to make up for all the lost time 🙂 Anyway, what have you guys been up to? Please link me all your new posts so I have the chance to check them out! ❤
I was planning to dedicate the month of March to awesome women but things didn’t quite work out Still, I hope I can manage to sneak in a few tags and posts before the month is over. This is one of them – thank you so much to Kate @ Melting Pots and Other Calamities for creating it and tagging me to do it! And also to A Book Without End for tagging me as well. I just love Ghibli so much *_* (Please check out their wonderful blogs after you’re done reading!)
The Rules:
- Please pingback, rather than link to me as Kate@Melting Pots and Other Calamities. I will only know if you’ve done this tag if you pingback.
- Tag as many people as you want. Ghibli movies aren’t as popular as Disney or Pixar, so be careful that those you tag are at least somewhat familiar with Ghibli.
- You can use examples from books, movies, TV shows, anime/manga, and webcomics.
- As this tag celebrates heroines, please name either a piece of fiction or a female character, if you’re able.
- Have fun!
*** I took the liberty of creating my own graphics since Kate said we could! So if you use them, please do credit me (Sophie @ Blame Chocolate). ***
Nausicaä is one of my favourite Ghibli girls! ❤ I’ll go with Imperator Furiosa from Mad Max: Fury Road.
If there ever was an inspiring princess, it’s Diana from Wonder Woman.
Jude and Taryn from The Cruel Prince, although I still don’t know what to make of these two and how close they actually are. (Still reading the book so no spoilers please!)
Alina from the Shadow and Bone trilogy.
Chitoge from Nisekoi, and Shin-Ae from I Love Yoo (respectively).
Lily Potter (I) from Harry Potter. She sacrificed herself to protect her family and before that, she was an Auror protecting everyone else. Yet I hear very few people talking about her.
Kestrel from The Winner’s Curse. I think we’re very similar personality-wise.
Korra from The Legend of Korra. That girl kicks butt and is super funny as well!
Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones. From meek little princess to epic conqueror!
Penryn from Penryn and The End of Days. In between angels, demons and whatnot, she still manages to come on top despite being a mere human girl.
Antigone from Antigone. No one ever gives this girl any love but my God, she was such a strong heroine and went through so much.
Lyra Belacqua from His Dark Materials.
Cinder from The Lunar Chronicles.
Elliot from Darkness Shows the Stars. Talk about obstacles!
Cati from Miss Abbott and the Doctor. Proper ladies don’t do hunting, construction or any of those manly activities – and Cati couldn’t care less!
I Tag: (you don’t have to like anime, by the way)
Bookish Owlette • Rendz @ Reading with Rendz • Musings of a Coffee Addicted Bibliophile • The Maniacal Book Unicorn • Raistlin0903 • Dani @ Perspective of a Writer • Azia @ The Uncharted World • Karandi @ 100WordAnime • Panic at the Bookstore • Icebreaker694 • Two Happy Cats • Tiana @ The Book Raven • Little Booky Nook • The Withering • Anna @ My Bookish Dream • Nadwa @ Painfully Fictional • Quirky and Peculiar • Steph @ Lost: Purple Quill • Cassiopeia’s Moon • Nicola @ Thoughts on Fantasy • Sam @ Rivermoose Reads • everyone else who wants to!

OMG!! I love this so much! Ponyo is one of my absolute favourites! There are quite a few here that are new to me that I will definitely be checking out. 🙂

I actually haven’t watched Ponyo yet… I KNOW!! But I plan to. I just haven’t had the time lately and I like to watch Miyazaki’s movies in chronological order so I still have to catch up. My personal faves are Mononoke Hime and Nausicaä. Though I loved each and every one in a different way! ❤

I’ve never heard of Ghibli! Where have I been? Clearly I’m missing something here, Sophie, and I’m intrigued. It’s great to see you back. 😀

Oh you definitely are!! Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki in particular have created the most magical and atmospheric of worlds, characters and stories. I would recommend them to anyone! I really hope you manage to try them out because they are most definitely not just for kids.
Thank you, Diana ❤ It's lovely to be back!

Hi Sophie~sorry it took me so long to reply, I’ve been quite energyless lately U.U now, back to the good stuff… *fan bonding moment* yess they are cute and steamy and so funny 😛 Cati feels like the friend that will guarantee embarrassing moments but you can’t get mad at because she has the innocence of a child, and Doctor Marino’s personality is almost begging to be teased 😛 perfect combination hahaha!

That’s absolutely fine, Alicia! I know exactly what you mean
Yeesss Cati is so adorable you just can’t tell her “no” hahaha
I think their personalities compliment each other super well ❤ If they were too similar it would be no fun! 😛

Thank you! Oh that’s awesome to hear!! I love meeting fans of Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki ❤ They are widely known but still there seems to be so many people who haven't heard of them and it makes me quite sad. I wish everyone could be touched by these wonderful characters and their journeys. I know I was!
Thanks so much ^^

Hello ,
I saw your tweet about animals and thought I will check your website. I like it!
I love pets. I have two beautiful thai cats called Tammy(female) and Yommo(male). Yommo is 1 year older than Tommy. He acts like a bigger brother for her. 🙂
I have even created an Instagram account for them ( https://www.instagram.com/tayo_home/ ) and probably soon they will have more followers than me (kinda funny).
I have subscribed to your newsletter. 🙂
Keep up the good work on your blog.

I saw Howl’s Moving Castle when it happened to be on TV a few Christmases back, but that’s the extent of my Ghibli experience. I don’t know why I haven’t seen more of their films – I have so many friends who adore them. I especially like the sound of The Secret Life of Arriety. I was obsessed with The Borrowers when I was a kid.

Oh, you definitely need to watch more from Ghibli/Miyazaki! They’re all so different and unique but one thing they all have in common are the strong heroines. It was always what most drew me to their stories: how they are so interesting and independent and fierce. Miyazaki sure knew how to write women! Some physically strong, some mentally strong. But all memorable.
I haven’t watched Arriety yet, sadly. But I need to ASAP! I always liked the idea of The Borrowers too 🙂

I do learn something every day! I never heard of Ghibli, so forgive me for my ignorance. After reading and seeing these pictures, they resemble characters of a cartoon show I watched as a child–Speed Racer. I looked it up and it is a Japanese media franchise. Hmmm…who would of thunk?

Oh that’s alright! I’m glad my post served to enlighten you 🙂 I always love to convert people to Ghibli hahaha
I actually don’t think I’ve heard of Speed Racer so we’re even! But I definitely watched a lot of anime growing up without knowing it was anime… If that makes sense. I think that’s very common! It’s not like we, as kids, cared where cartoons came from 😛 But it’s interesting nonetheless.

Oh great answers for this tag Sophie, and great graphics as well. 😀
Diana Prince is definitely an inspiring princess, I think she’s actually my favourite member of royalty full stop, and oh Jude and Taryn are a great par of siblings. I think there’s a lot more to their relationship we still have to discover but hopefully that’ll come in the next book maybe.
Daenerys has an epic character journey, she’s unrecognizable now from the girl we met in the first book/season, and oh Penryn is definitely a memorable heroine. I think the fact that she doesn’t have any powers, that she does everything she does as just a human, makes her even more exceptional you know?
Again great answers, and great post as well. 🙂 ❤

Thank you so much, Beth! ❤
Absolutely, I adore her (in the movie, I have yet to read Bardugo's book!) and have yet to find someone more suitable.
I'm really enjoying the sisters dynamic so far, and I'm almost done with it so I agree that there'll be a lot more to explore in book two.
Definitely! I think Daenerys might be a bit too smug lately and her attitude/actions bore me a little sometimes but it still makes for a very flawed heroine and doesn't discredit her amazing development.
Exactly, my respect for Penryn stems mostly from the fact that she's so strong minded and determined and she'll do anything to protect the ones she loves, despite her weaknesses. I mean, she went up against really tough competition and stood her ground beautifully. All the other characters have awesome personalities as well, but yeah she outshone them all.
Thank you so much, hon ^^ ❤ ❤

That’s all right. Oh in that case I’d definitely recommend the book, it’s a good read overall.
Yes, after the way The Cruel Prince ended I can’t wait to read more in the next book. It’s sure to be incredible as well.
I guess her actions in the later seasons are still all part of that development right? 🙂
For me it makes what she did that little bit more incredible. She’s not been chosen for anything and she doesn’t have any special powers but she does what she does because she has to for someone she loves.
That’s all right. 🙂 ❤️

Thank you so much for tagging me for this Sophie!! I LOVE AND ADORE Ghibli movies and have seen a lot of them (but not the music video…) I soooo agree about Elliot from Darkness Shows the Stars. I just finished that a few weeks ago and wow… I just loved it and boy did she have major obstacles. Cinder too is an unlikely hero but I really came to like her so much more in Scarlet which i also just finished! ❤ Anyway I will definitely be doing this tag ❤

Of course! I thought you might like this, Dani 😉 I know how much you love your manga/anime! And any manga/anime fan will be familiar with Miyazaki and Ghibli so yay ❤
I loved DSTS soooo much, but it was also a very stressful read because I kept rooting for things to go well and there always seemed to be some sort of obstacle and it was just uuughhhh SO GOOD but also quite the anxious experience xD
I'm glad you liked Cinder especially after Scarlet. She becomes so much more in future books so get ready to love her!
I look forward to seeing your answers ^^ ❤

Great tag and graphics! They’re so gorgeous and I am so impressed that you made them. I agree with a lot of your answers. I only just watched Mad Max Fury Road this past weekend and I absolutely loved Furiosa. She was so fierce and fearless! I also really love Diana as Wonder Woman so I am happy you have her on this list too. Cinder is quite the unlikely (but kick-butt) hero. I have read The Winner’s Curse but that book wasn’t one for me so I can’t really remember what Kestrel was like…

Thank you, Olivia! That’s so sweet of you ❤ I'm glad you enjoyed them ^^
YES! Furiosa is so badass, I love her! And Diana as well, but in a very different way. She's kind and loving and much more driven by her emotions.
I think Cinder was the perfect hero in her story as she suffered a major development throughout. It's nice to see that happening.
The Winner's Trilogy was one of my favourites! I'm so sorry it wasn't for you… But oh well, can't please everyone 🙂 Kestrel made a lot of mistakes and she was very rational. She also tried to do what was best for everyone around her, and it caused her a lot of pain. Sometimes her decisions were a bit too harsh but necessary. So I see myself a lot in her.

This looks like such a fun tag and good job on those graphics! I love the Ghibli studio anime, although I have yet to watch all of them. I haven’t read many of the books you mentioned, but I do agree with Lyra and Ponyo! Although quite different, they are on a similar path and both have so much yet to do and experience.

I loved Lyra and HDM but unfortunately have yet to watch Ponyo… I’ve picked them up in chronological order so because it came out fairly recently I haven’t had the chance to watch it. Will fix that soon!

Wow! This is such a fantastic tag! I adore Studio Ghibli movies. ❤ So I'm super exited that you tagged me to do this tag as well. 😀 Your graphics are wonderful as well and I will definitely be using them, of course I'm going to credit you so no worries there. 😉
My favourite Ghibli heroines are probably San, Sophie and Kiki. Though I do like all of them, out of the movies that I watched that is.
