Feel Me Fall – Book Review (Spoiler-Free)

Hiya, guys! How are you doing this fine Friday?

Today I bring you a review on a book called Feel Me Fall, which I’d wanted to read back in October but never did… Again, my apologies to the author for only getting to it now but, for all it’s worth, I really loved it? So I think that’s what matters 🙂

Thank you very much, Jim, for providing me with a review copy!

Emily Duran is the sole survivor of a plane crash that left her and her teenage friends stranded and alone in the jungles of the Amazon. Now safe and sound back at civilization, can she carry the burden of the past while telling her story?

first-impressions

I really didn’t know what to expect from this book. It promised a sort of mystery/thriller kind of story with a philosophical sort of vibe, which really intrigued me. I wish I’d read it sooner because it certainly made for a wonderful read!

the-sweet

I feel like to talk about anything specific in this book might be considered a spoiler, so I’ll try to keep it short.

The whole book was incredibly realistic and quite brutal. I mean, I was expecting things to get a little heated in the jungle but I never quite knew what to expect. You can really feel the horror and how the kids are coping with it in their own different ways.

I really liked the suspense and the use of flashbacks to tell the story at three different points in time. They all come together wonderfully in the end and completely shook me to my core. Every time I thought something had been revealed, there was always another layer to peel.

The way the author described the landscape, the feel of the Amazon, and the effect it would have on city kids was brilliant. How it behaved almost like something that was alive and breathing and pumping blood, delivering a sort of penance for their sins.

The group dynamics were really well-done. I loved the friendships and rivalries and how they all played their part in the story – not an idyllic version but the raw truth.

I appreciated the author’s recurrent use of foreshadowing to kind of warn us about what was to come, yet somehow I never saw the majority of the twists coming at all. I had a big sense of foreboding but I could never pinpoint exactly what would happen.

This book is a great study of human psychology and what we are willing to do to survive. I liked how you never really knew what was reality and what was fiction until the very end, mostly because there was only one single POV and one faulty memory to draw conclusions from. The more I read the more I smiled at the ingeniousness of it all. Seriously. I loved how it thrashed stereotypes and surprised you at every turn.

The ending is completely open and could potentially lead to a sequel, which I’d totally be down for.

the-bitter

I guess my only “complaint” would be for it to be a bit longer, even though I did like the short chapters as they made for a very fluid read. A longer book would have really got me to sweat with fear and doubt.

Don’t get me wrong – I was actually quite attached to the story and felt it was condensed nicely – I just think a few extra pages dealing with everything that was going on would have made it perfect. Sometimes things moved just a little too quickly and I would have liked to have stayed with them a bit longer.

I also had a hard time distinguishing each character in the beginning (especially the guys) and it took a while before they all morphed into unique individuals for me. But after that, it was all great.

final-thoughts

Overall, this book was an awesome read. I had no real expectations for it, even though I’d seen some fellow bloggers rave about it. Now I can safely say I agree with their verdict.

Feel Me Fall is spectacular in breaking down the human psyche into its rawest form, playing with very overdone concepts and making them unique, as well as leaving you guessing for the whole second half. It had amazing suspense, amazing characters, an amazing story and pretty cool writing.

The foreshadowing and use of a unreliable narrator were probably the cherries on top for me. They made the whole thing absolutely genius and so engaging. Even those of us who are not big fans of thrillers will probably fall in love with this one, and want to find out what really happened to these kids.

In short, I absolutely recommend this.

    1. Thanks so much! 🙂
Me too, I wasn’t expecting any of it to be honest. The second half definitely surprised me and only made me love the book more ❤
I think it deserves a sequel, no? We can't just be left hanging like this!

  1. Another great review! I love survivalist stories, man/woman vs nature in some way, or seeing people go to extremes in order to survive. It never fails to surprise me as to how much length human beings are willing to go in order just to stay alive. So definitely adding this one to my to read list! Terrific post as always 😀😀

    1. Thank you so much! 🙂 Yeah me too, even though I’ve never actually read many books about them? I mostly just enjoyed movies/TV shows and the occasional documentary/reality TV and now that I think about it, I really shouldn’t have been that shocked I loved this hahaha
It’s the will-to-live aspect that really makes it worth it, I think. I definitely plan on reading more books like this and if you have any recs, please do share! 🙂
I honestly hope you enjoy it, it’s one of my favorite books of the year so far ^^
      Thank you! ❤

    1. Absolutely, one of the best books I’ve tried in a while! 🙂 Maybe because I had no expectations? Sometimes that plays a role too.
If that’s the case, then I’m sure you’ll love this one. Is very different and very well-written ❤

  2. I love unreliable narrators and expert use of different time POVs sounds incredible! Funny that despite this all working you needed more pages… I wonder what it was missing! I love reviews like this Sophie because it makes my writerly instincts flash on and get intrigued, lol! Thanks for sharing! 😀

    1. Me too! Seldom does an author get it right and make it work as well as this one, I was definitely impressed 🙂
I’m not sure? I guess it might be personal preference and me enjoying a longer story where I could get more time with the characters in the jungle? I guess it felt a bit rushed? Hmm, could be.
Hahaha I’m glad it had that effect! I was hoping it would 😛
Thank you so much, Dani, and I hope you get to read this and enjoy it ❤ ^_^

    1. Yes, absolutely! As long as it doesn’t feel gratuitous and adds nothing to the story, I’m fine with brutal hahaha
Thank you so much, Trang ❤ And it did, it's definitely an interesting take on the whole mystery/thriller genre 🙂

  3. Wow.I haven’t read a proper mystery/thriller in a long time (except maybe a Historical Mystery I read recently but I don’t think it compares). This sounds intriguing and I LOVE when an author can increase tension from chapter to chapter. I think I’ll add this to my tbr.

    1. Yeah, me neither! I didn’t think I was actually that interested in the genre but this book proved me wrong. Which title was it you’ve read, if you don’t mind my asking? I love finding new cool books to read 🙂
Morris absolutely killed it on the tension building and keep the reader guessing what was the truth and what wasn’t until the very end.
I’m sure you’ll enjoy it a lot, Astrid. Happy reading!

      1. I read Death Below Stairs by Jennifer Ashley. I thought it was wonderful – it’s a classic who-dunnit with a dash of romance in England’s 19th century. 😀

I really need to check yours out!

  4. I read this book last year and loved it too! ❤️
The amount of twists in it were great and it was so much fun to read. I didn’t see most of the twists coming, either! And some of them were very surprising, especially the ending! Amazing review, Sophie 😊

    1. Ah, that’s awesome! I’m glad you did 🙂
Right?? I was sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time, there was so much going on and so many surprising twists! I was completely shocked by some of them, they were so unexpected. The ending was definitely the best one. It made me wonder whether we’ll be getting a sequel? 😉
Thank you so much, Charlotte ❤

  5. Great review for this book Sophie. 🙂 I think I saw another review for Feel Me Fall from a blogger who also enjoyed it so I guess it’s safe to say this is a great book overall! 😀
I get what you mean when you feel talking too much about a book will spoil it, I feel that way about some of the books I’ve read, but I do think you’ve done a great job at writing this review and making people interested without ruining any of the major plot points. It’s a shame this one wasn’t a little longer then as well, if that’s the main complaint you had, and yeah I’ve read books where things have felt a little rushed because there wasn’t enough of the story to flesh everything out. 🙂
Still I’m glad you enjoyed this one, and again great review. 🙂 ❤

    1. Thanks so much, Beth ❤ I did see a couple of them a few months back when the author first contacted me, but I didn't get the chance to read it back then. I do think this is one of those books a lot of people will enjoy and one that is highly underrated 🙂
That's wonderful to hear, thank you! I wouldn't want to ruin anything for anyone as it really is a great book to go in blindly. I'm glad I could accomplish that 🙂
Yeah I think that's basically all I could point out that wasn't as great, but overall there was nothing completely negative about it. More like "could improve" aspects that would have made this a 5 star review.
It was a pleasant surprise, yeah, and thank you! I think you would enjoy it if you like the genre, or even if you're new to it. It would be a safe bet, in my opinion 🙂

      1. That’s all right! 😀 Well hopefully in that case more people will discover this one, enjoy it and it will get a little bit more recognition. Sometimes underrated is good when it comes to books, I just tend to be a little too swept away by hype.
I have a few books like that, where I’ve let myself go in blind because I know I’ll enjoy the story more that way, and yeah as far as not great aspects to a book go it not being long enough isn’t really a major issue is it? 😀
That’s all right, and thanks Sophie. 🙂 ❤

  6. That was a great review, Sophie! I am so happy to hear you enjoyed that one – I read the book… a little while ago and I was surprised by how much I loved it? It was a bit outside of my comfort zone, yet I found myself immersed into the story and caring and scared for the characters. I loved the friendships’ dynamics in this as well and that ending was a bit crazy overall. AND that unreliable narrator was so interesting 🙂
So happy you enjoyed it 😀

    1. Thank you, Marie 🙂 Yeah, exactly my thoughts! I really wasn’t expecting to enjoy it so much and just find myself so highly engaged with the plot, characters and overall writing. I literally lay on my bed ready to bite my nails off as I read on, wondering what would happen next hahaha
Definitely not a genre that I reach out for a lot, no, but one I’m ready to explore further – in part because of this book. Are you of the same opinion? A sequel would be awesome, especially after that ending!
I’m so glad we shared the same experience 🙂 And I’m so happy you loved it too! ❤

  7. Cool review, I wasn’t sure which direction you were going to go when I read the synopsis. Figured the author would nail it or it would end up completely unrealistic.

  8. I love these types of psychological thrillers! I can see how the pacing could be quite fast if the book is too short. The whole concept of being lost on the Amazon is one that really intrigues me. I’ll have to look for this one. 🙂

    1. I don’t usually read the genre but this one definitely made me want to, now! It was a bit too fast for my liking, even though it didn’t affect the suspense, just my overall emotional connection to it. Had it been longer and I would have given it 5 stars, easily.
I think you’ll really enjoy it! The concept is quite unique and I was always super interested in following the characters around the jungle and experiencing everything they were experiencing. It was just a very wholesome experience 🙂

  9. That’s awesome that you are reviewing books from authors’ requests. You are on a roll! This book does sounds unique.. placing city kids in the amazons.. yeah, I can imagine my own struggle too haha.. I’m glad you enjoyed reading this book! Always excellent review from you! 🙂

    1. Yes, I finally started what I should have started months ago hahaha I’m just not a great book blogger xD
It’s super unique and very unpredictable… You won’t know what’s going on, who to trust, who’s telling the truth and who’s not… It’s so so good. You’ll be on the edge of your seat trying to figure it out the entire time. Very worth the read in my opinion 🙂
Thank you so much, Jasmine! ❤ I hope you give it a try sometime.

  10. Nice review. I have not heard about this book but the story sounds fascinating. And brutal. I have an addiction to plane crash movies, I don’t know why. I hate flying, too. Terrified of it. It’s a morbid obsession!

    1. Thank you, Rebecca 🙂 I do have some fear of flying but has gotten better over time – I think this book didn’t exactly contribute to assuage it but I can’t say it made me any more fearful either hahaha
Even though the main character does talk about how “no one ever expects it to happen to them” which is very true and very scary, I think if you go around being so frightful of every single thing, you’ll never do anything in your life, right? So just be responsible and weigh your risks and you’ll be just as fine as anyone else.
Being so terrified of the whole what-if, I would advise you to skip this book. But seeing as you enjoy plane crash movies so much, I think you’ll be fine 😉

  11. I love unreliable narrators, ah, they make a book so much fun. And I understand wishing for a book to be a bit longer.

It does sound like a harsh book, surviving a plane crash, especially if it doesn’t treat surviving in a light way, but in a raw realistic way. I am quite intrigued!

    1. Me too! Without wanting to spoil it for you, the unreliable narrator is a really big part of this story and you’ll see why once you read it 🙂 (if you do, that is, but I hope you do!)
I think that’s what makes this so unique: you get all the reality of what a plane crash would actually look like and how teenagers would behave when faced with that sudden shift in their lives. A total wake up call, and of course not a gentle one.
It is super intriguing and you won’t know what hit you 😉 Trust me!

  12. Absolutely wonderful review, Sophie! I’m glad to see such a positive review for a book that has left you wanting more. Something about this one reminds me A LOT of The Lord of the Flies though. I’m not such if it was homage to it though. It does however have the perfect setting and premise to explore the themes you’ve mentioned and I’m glad to hear they were done properly. 😀

You know what, I haven’t read TLotF yet so I can’t say but from what I know about it I guess you’re right 🙂 Which, if you liked it, might mean you will enjoy this one as well? I’m not sure if it was one, either, but I don’t think so because I didn’t see it mentioned in the acknowledgements/notes section.
They most definitely were! It was such a great read ^^

  13. Love this review- probably the best I’ve seen for the book. I also loved it and I totally agree about the ingeniousness of how it’s written with layers and layers of revelations and how the whole jungle and scenes were brought to life. Can’t say I normally jump on survivalist stories automatically and the thought of something happening in this single setting (jungle, desert, etc) usually makes me think- weeeelll, this might be boring.. but with Feel Me Fall? Man, it was perfect! 🙂

    1. Oh, thanks so much Liz! That’s so sweet of you to say ❤
Me neither, and I was definitely not expecting to love it so much. My thoughts exactly! I was ready to go through some boring, uninspiring story about some brats trying to survive in the jungle and ended up super engaged and caring about these characters and their lives. A great lesson for me, I guess hahaha

  14. Definitely sounds intriguing! Love the sound of how horrifying this was (which is a weird sentence but whatever) and I really like books which explore the psyche. And I’m an absolute sucker for unreliable narrators. This was already on my radar, but your review has certainly pushed this higher up my tbr!! Wonderful review!!

    1. Hahaha no, it makes total sense actually. I think any book who can make us feel any type of strong emotion (be it good or bad) is great 🙂
I’m glad to hear it! I’m definitely not the only one who’s raved about it so I’m sure you’ll love it too.
Thank you so much ^_^ ❤

  15. You can tell that a book is good when one of your complaints is that it wasn’t long enough! It sounds like one intense read, especially when the author isn’t afraid to be brutually honest about everything the kids are experiencing! I think this is definitely my type of action read. I’m curious about it now :3

    Like

    1. Hahaha yup! I think that’s what pleased me the most. And also the fact that these kids were so unapologetic and realistic. Sometimes they were mean, selfish, and downright nasty, but they were honest and didn’t feel like they were straight out of a cookie cutter script. Which I appreciated 🙂
I hope you give it a try! It’s definitely an interesting story ^^

  16. Hi! Great review! I never heard of this book before and reading the plot I wasn’t so interested in it, but then I read your review and I had to rethink my opinions. The realist part was interesting and it seems a good reading, so I have to write down the title! 🙂
