Feel Me Fall – Book Review (Spoiler-Free)

Today I bring you a review on a book called Feel Me Fall, which I’d wanted to read back in October but never did… Again, my apologies to the author for only getting to it now but, for all it’s worth, I really loved it? So I think that’s what matters 🙂

I really didn’t know what to expect from this book. It promised a sort of mystery/thriller kind of story with a philosophical sort of vibe, which really intrigued me. I wish I’d read it sooner because it certainly made for a wonderful read!

I feel like to talk about anything specific in this book might be considered a spoiler, so I’ll try to keep it short.

The whole book was incredibly realistic and quite brutal. I mean, I was expecting things to get a little heated in the jungle but I never quite knew what to expect. You can really feel the horror and how the kids are coping with it in their own different ways.

I really liked the suspense and the use of flashbacks to tell the story at three different points in time. They all come together wonderfully in the end and completely shook me to my core. Every time I thought something had been revealed, there was always another layer to peel.

The way the author described the landscape, the feel of the Amazon, and the effect it would have on city kids was brilliant. How it behaved almost like something that was alive and breathing and pumping blood, delivering a sort of penance for their sins.

The group dynamics were really well-done. I loved the friendships and rivalries and how they all played their part in the story – not an idyllic version but the raw truth.

I appreciated the author’s recurrent use of foreshadowing to kind of warn us about what was to come, yet somehow I never saw the majority of the twists coming at all. I had a big sense of foreboding but I could never pinpoint exactly what would happen.

This book is a great study of human psychology and what we are willing to do to survive. I liked how you never really knew what was reality and what was fiction until the very end, mostly because there was only one single POV and one faulty memory to draw conclusions from. The more I read the more I smiled at the ingeniousness of it all. Seriously. I loved how it thrashed stereotypes and surprised you at every turn.

The ending is completely open and could potentially lead to a sequel, which I’d totally be down for.

I guess my only “complaint” would be for it to be a bit longer, even though I did like the short chapters as they made for a very fluid read. A longer book would have really got me to sweat with fear and doubt.

Don’t get me wrong – I was actually quite attached to the story and felt it was condensed nicely – I just think a few extra pages dealing with everything that was going on would have made it perfect. Sometimes things moved just a little too quickly and I would have liked to have stayed with them a bit longer.

I also had a hard time distinguishing each character in the beginning (especially the guys) and it took a while before they all morphed into unique individuals for me. But after that, it was all great.

Overall, this book was an awesome read. I had no real expectations for it, even though I’d seen some fellow bloggers rave about it. Now I can safely say I agree with their verdict.

Feel Me Fall is spectacular in breaking down the human psyche into its rawest form, playing with very overdone concepts and making them unique, as well as leaving you guessing for the whole second half. It had amazing suspense, amazing characters, an amazing story and pretty cool writing.

The foreshadowing and use of a unreliable narrator were probably the cherries on top for me. They made the whole thing absolutely genius and so engaging. Even those of us who are not big fans of thrillers will probably fall in love with this one, and want to find out what really happened to these kids.

In short, I absolutely recommend this.
