Christmas Review – My True Love Gave to Me (Spoiler-Free)

Hey everyone! How are you all doing? 🙂

I’m sorry this review is coming a bit late… Mostly, it’s because I couldn’t, for the life of me, finish this book. So yeah. Get ready for another joyride…

My True Love Gave to Me

my-true-love-gave-to-me

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me… This beautiful collection features twelve gorgeously romantic stories set during the festive period, by some of the most talented and exciting YA authors writing today. The stories are filled with the magic of first love and the magic of the holidays.

MIDNIGHTS by Rainbow Rowell

Wow, this book sure knew how to grab my attention from the start (not). I honestly thought this one was going to be terrible. It started a bit weird, eventually got super cute, but by the end was just meh. I don’t know what is it with Rainbow Rowell but I just can’t find any of her stories as wonderful as everyone else seems to… It was just okay.

THE LADY AND THE FOX by Kelly Link

Man, this was one weird tale. The writing style was weird and a bit confusing at times (it was not bad, per se, it just wasn’t something I’m used to) but by the end, I guess I couldn’t help but feel intrigued. Still, I felt mostly creeped out.

POLARIS IS WHERE YOU’LL FIND ME by Jenny Han

This was so unsatisfying, even if it was kind of cute! I found there was no real resolution at the end and it dimmed my enthusiasm a bit. If you liked Elf, though, you’ll probably like this one as it uses the same concept.

IT’S A YULETIDE MIRACLE, CHARLIE BROWN by Stephanie Perkins

I’m not going to lie: I thought this one was adorable. But – and this is a big but – it was incredibly instalovey. I liked both protagonists and how their “relationship” evolved – it simply needed more time to convince me whatever they had was the slightest bit meaningful and real. I’m just not a “love at first sight” kind of gal, sorry.

3-5-candy-cane.png

YOUR TEMPORARY SANTA by David Levithan

This one was adorable. I don’t actually have much to say other than I felt all warm and fuzzy inside while reading it. Well done. And bonus points for diversity!

KRAMPUSLAUF by Holly Black

I didn’t like this one as much as I thought I would. It was really cool at first but then kind of took a weird turn and nothing much happened afterwards? I loved the idea behind it, I just felt it was a bit rushed and messy. But, overall, an enjoyable read.

WHAT THE HELL HAVE YOU DONE, SOPHIE ROTH? by Gayle Foreman

Again, the ending was a bit rushed but I really liked this couple. They were really cute and dorky together and even though it felt like the author was trying to make them sound too special at times, it was still a pretty sweet read. I didn’t care much for the unnecessary drama, though.

BEER BUCKETS AND BABY JESUS by Myra McEntire

Look, I’m a sucker for bad boy/good girl romances so no wonder I liked this one. I have grown fond of male voices as well and this was definitely a refreshing take on the rebel without a cause trope.

4-candy-cane

ANGELS IN THE SNOW by Matt de la Peña

I loved the protagonist (again, the male POV really got me) but didn’t care much for his love interest. She was annoying and I didn’t understand what he saw in her (other than her looks). Nevertheless, it was such an adorable story I can’t complain much. Also, it featured an awesome cat.

STAR OF BETHLEHEM by Ally Carter

I was so confused at the start of this story. And thankfully, I didn’t guess the plot “twist” right away, despite countless opportunities. It’s one of those really implausible stories but I couldn’t care less – it was super cute and relatable and even made me a bit misty eyed. The ending felt super rushed, though, so that’s the only reason I’m giving it a lower rating.

4-5-candy-cane.png

WELCOME TO CHRISTMAS, CA by Kiersten White

This one was an absolute favorite of mine. It really drew me in from the start and made me fall in love with the characters, setting and everything, really. I adored the magical realism vibe and how everything fit together so nicely. I guess I always loved this idea that food holds some sort of healing quality to it. I also cried. So ready the tissues.

THE GIRL WHO WOKE THE DREAMER by Laini Taylor

Up until this point, I had been trying to give the other authors some credit as they were given very few pages to work with and would, thus, be susceptible to rushing things/not being able to produce their best work.

But when Laini Taylor stepped on stage with this amazing fantasy world building, fleshed out characters and a kickass story in under ninety pages… One could not come up with any more excuses. You either have it or you don’t, and most of these authors showed they didn’t have it – at least, not when it came to short stories. They might otherwise be wonderful writers; I wouldn’t know. All I know is that Taylor has reigned supreme, once again.

Anthologies… Why, oh why, won’t you let me love you?

I felt super underwhelmed by most of these stories, even if I did end up enjoying them. They just didn’t stick on my mind long enough for me to care. Also, I always felt like they could have been improved in some way. I mean, the potential was there, the authors just didn’t really know how to use it.

I liked that, as a whole, they comprise a pretty diverse bunch in terms of characters and plots, as it never felt like I was reading the same exact story. As for quality and writing style, they were also all pretty similar (something I struggled with in my previous anthology). Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to make this anything but average.

Overall, I was severely disappointed in this book. Not because it was bad, but because it wasn’t as awesome as it could have been. And that was incredibly frustrating. There are some real gems here, and I would recommend anyone read those because they are amazing. Otherwise, don’t get your hopes up.

  1. It’s hard for me to fall in love with anthologies, too, but this one for me wasn’t so bad. I loved a couple of the stories, even if it was just a couple of them, but I didn’t dislike the others (I mean dislike-dislike) and I appreciated the Christmas vibes all around. I really hope you can find a really good Christmas reading that you’ll love! 🙂

    1. Yeah, I didn’t dislike any of these either… They just weren’t as great as I expected them to be. And when compared to the really good ones, there was no way they could get the same rating.
I didn’t particularly mind reading any of these and I thought this was one balanced collection, yet needed a little extra something to really shine through. But I loved the Christmasy vibes, of course!
I’m glad you enjoyed it more than me, though 🙂 And thank you! ❤

  2. Ah yes THIS anthology. We meet again *squints eyes to the cover*

I read this last year and up until this point is my fave Christmas focused YA thing I’ve found. It didn’t wow me but I read much worse things this year (COUGH LET IT SNOW COUGH) so in comparison it made me think how WONDERFULLY ANGELIC this one was. I really liked some of the stories actually and I thought they were AT LEAST original.
Laini Taylor’s one was also my fave I wanted moree…mostly because it has to do with fooood….
I wasn’t impressed by Rainbow Rowell’s story either. It even got put into a whole separate anthology (Midnights) and tbh I didn’t see why that was necessary. Meh.

    1. Hahaha old acquaintances, I see! xD
Hmm I definitely am not planning to read Let It Snow, but I get that when compared to a really bad one, this might look pretty good xD I agree that the stories were pretty original and overall not badly written. Just didn’t have the wow factor, like you said.
Well, it’s Rainbow Rowell. And a loooot of people love her to death. I’m not judging but personally, none of her stories have made me feel anything much so I don’t get the hype. Much less the need for a separate anthology. Have you read anything else by her, and liked it?
Laini Taylor is on a whole other level, in my opinion! So I wasn’t surprised she completely stole my heart with her contribution 🙂

      1. Carry On by Rainbow Rowell is one of my favourite books actually but I’ve only ever read that and Fangirl (which was ok but not fantastically ahnsafhskkl) but I recommend it. It’s like a contemporary but with wizards and dragons which is to say nothing like a contemporary and more like a stabby fantasy that I like.
And don’t make the mistake of reading Let it Snow. Save yourself the pain.

        1. You know, I read Fangirl and I found Simon and the gang to be my least favorite part of it ^^’ So I doubt I would enjoy Carry On. It just felt sooo distracting and completely broke the story’s flow for me. I didn’t care much for the characters or storyline either…
Hahaha “stabby fantasy” sounds epic, though 😂
And I’ll take your advice on that! I’ve been disappointed enough this holiday season 😂😂

  3. EEK this review was fabulous!
I’ve read this book, and my favorites were your favorites too! Welcome To Christmas, CA and The Girl Who Woke The Dreamer were just too good for words. I really, really did not understand the Lady And The Fox. It was unsatisfying, but all the others were ok. I think I actually liked Midnights, Rainbow Rowell isn’t for everyone though.

That's great to know ^^ The Lady and the Fox was really, really confusing. I didn't get it at all, either. I mean, I appreciated the risk taken but it didn't quite work for me.
It's not that I disliked Midnights per se, it just didn't make me feel much. It was fine, I guess, but when compared to the others, it really lost its sheen. And I agree that Rowell's not for everyone! I'm living proof of that hahaha
Are you a fan of hers or do you have any favorites from her? So far I've only read Fangirl and wasn't too impressed either…

  4. Great review for this book Sophie, though I’m sorry to see there were a fair few stories you weren’t a massive fan of. I read this book last year over Christmas so I can’t remember all of the stories by their titles but a few of the main ones stuck out for me; like Laini Taylor’s The Girl Who Woke the Dreamer which is actually a favourite of mine as well, then again I didn’t really expect much else from Laini Taylor, and Welcome to Christmas, CA which I really enjoyed mainly because of the food in the story. I love the idea that food can be used to heal all as well. 😀
Still three and a little bit candy canes is a good rating, and hopefully you’ll enjoy the next anthology you pick up a little more. 🙂
    Again great review. 😀 ❤

    1. Thank you so much, Beth ❤
Yeah, see, that's what I'm kind of feeling… That, after a few days, I simply forgot most of the stories and what they were about, or whether I liked them or not. I'm glad I was able to get the review out right away, otherwise it would have been hard to recall any of my feelings towards them.
It's awesome that we have the same taste! 🙂 Welcome to Christmas, CA was so incredibly beautiful and comforting, and it felt like the most Christmasy to me. Really cozy and sweet and just perfect. Laini’s was absolutely fantastic, as always. None of the others could have ever competed with it…
Thanks, I hope so too! Though I’ll probably not be picking any any time soon 😛 I’m trying to get through my Christmas TBR as much as possible so an anthology will have to wait hahaha
      Thank you, hon! ❤ ❤

      1. That’s all right! 😀 Yeah looking back there have been a few anthologies I rated higher than I probably should have, and now looking back I can’t remember nearly as much as I should have about the individual stories for it to have got as high a rating from me as it did.
Oh is there anyone out there who doesn’t love Laini Taylor’s books? I’ve yet to meet them. 🙂 And yeah Welcome to Christmas CA probably was the most Christmas-y. After all what goes better with Christmas than food. 😀
That’s all right, and I’ll wish you luck with your Christmas TBR list in that case. Do you have many books left on it?
        That’s all right. 🙂 ❤

        1. I have yet to meet them as well! 😛 Laini Taylor is ❤ ❤
Hahaha yup, food and Christmas ^_^ Such a simple concept, but so satisfying!
Thanks, Beth! Hmm I don't have a specific number of books I want to read. I have about thirty on my TBR and I'll read as many as I can, choosing depending on my mood. It sounds like a lot and it is, but I just like to have options xD I have only read four, am almost finished with my fifth, and will aim towards reading at least one more before Christmas (though I'm not too hopeful hahaha)
What about you, planning to read anything Christmasy soon? 🙂

          Liked by 1 person

          1. At least having that many means you have options. I’m a mood reader so when it comes to books on my to-read list I need options because chances are I never know what book I’m going to be in the mood for day to day. 🙂
Seems like you’ve made it through a fair few then, and that’s great. I’ll keep my fingers crossed you manage to get that last one in before Christmas. 😀
Nah, no Christmas reads for me this year, just a few books I need to try and get through before the year ends is all. 🙂 ❤

            Like

            1. Oh I’m a mood reader too, thus the many options right at hand 😂
I’m currently reading the classic A Christmas Carol. I know the story but never read the book before, which is a complete fail on my part!
Ah I see. That’s good, less stress trying to find any good ones hahaha
I sure hope you manage to read them all before the year ends, then! 😊
And thanks, I’m doing my best 😄

  5. Ooh, that really sounds like you could definitely have enjoyed it a lot more. Sorry to hear that it really could have been better, but your review for it really could not have been any better 😊 Really enjoyed it, and I had to laugh quite a bit at it as well (that opening sentence for the first story was hilarious (wow this book sure knew how to grab my attention…not😂😂).
Short story collections can be a bit of a hit and miss with me as well. I usually prefer just full length novels.
But as I said your review was every bit as amazing as usual. Terrific post, and looking forward to the next one 😊😊

Hahaha yeah, I was a bit bitter while writing this review… But I tried to keep it as lighthearted as possible 😂
I'm starting to realize that about myself. I do love short stories, but not anthologies. They are usually too diverse for me to be able to enjoy them whole (and it would be kind of impossible, I guess). So picking one short story I know I'll probably like is usually best.
Thank you so much! I look forward to more amazing comments from you, as well ^_^ In the meantime, keep those awesome posts of yours coming!!

  6. My favs were It’s A Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown and Welcome to Christmas, CA. I also liked the next book collection, Summer Days and Summer Nights: Twelve Love Stories. Marigold & North show up in another story in the second book- which I adored, as their story in the first book was one of my favorites.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ah I didn’t know there was a following book! I’ll be sure to keep in mind for the summer 🙂 I’m really curious to see whether that one will grab my attention.
Marigold and North were really cute and adorable! It’s a shame that it all happened so quickly, though. It didn’t have the same impact for me. I usually prefer slowburn romances and instalove is certainly something I hardly tolerate (only under very specific circumstances). Still, I think that I’ll probably enjoy their next story a lot more 🙂
Thank you for your lovely comment, Nancy! ❤

  7. I’ve never read this book, but honestly, I don’t think I ever will. It just doesn’t catch my attention …
I have read most of Rainbow Rowell’s books, and I only enjoyed her YA novels, so I’m not sure if I’d enjoy her part in this novel. I’ve only read previous works of Jenny Han and Gayle Forman, too, and it’s kind of disappointing that their parts aren’t great either :/

    Like

    1. Yeah, I wouldn’t recommend it either… Or, at least, skip the bad apples in this.
I’m not a Rowell fan, so I wasn’t too surprised her short story didn’t appeal to me all that much. I was really hoping Foreman and Han would do the trick, though, as they are so hyped up. But that didn’t happen either… Oh well. I’m still hoping to read some of their other novels, just in case 🙂
Which of them did you read? And were they great or just okay?

      Like

      1. I liked Ally Carter’s, Gayle Forman’s, Myra McEntire’s, and Stephanie Perkins’ best. I guess they were the most standard of contemporary stories, which was what I was expecting with this anthology. I think maybe if I read the stories again knowing that they’re not all just cute contemps I may enjoy it more.

        Like

        1. Ah yeah, I did like those as well and had I not read Laini Taylor’s or Kiersten White’s I would have rated them a lot higher. But when comparing them, it was very hard not to feel like the last two were far superior. I went in thinking these stories would be super cute and fluffy so I wasn’t too disappointed in that aspect. I guess the fact that they were so short and seemed rushed in most places was what made me enjoy them less…

  8. I read this a year ago and I agree with you that some stories did fall short – glad to see you enjoyed some of the same stories I enjoyed though! Welcome to Christmas, CA and The Girl Who Woke The Dreamer are my favourites from the whole book 😀
    Great post!

    1. Great to know you and I have the same taste, Gemma! 🙂 Those two were, hands down, the best stories in the entire anthology. The others really paled in comparison and had I not read those two at the end, I would have maybe rated the others a little higher.
      Thank you so much! ❤

  9. Awesome review!! I’ve been curious about this for ages!! This sounds like such a mixed bag- which I also get whenever I read anthologies. Some of them seem cute, but it’s a shame others were unsatisfying. I’m glad that Taylor reigned supreme though- I can’t say I’m surprised, she’s awesome!! It’s just a shame this was frustrating with so many of the other stories!!

    1. Thank you so much! 😊😊 Oh yeah, Taylor will never disappoint me I’m sure ❤ I know I can count on her to make any book ending spectacular!
Unfortunately, yeah, that's what you get when you read anthologies… I have yet to find a really good, balanced one. Do you happen to have any decent recs?

  10. You are so brave Sophie always going for the anthologies… I’m not a fan of short stories in general as there simply isn’t enough page space to actually develop characters. I think Taylor does so well because she’s great at developing them off the page in her mind first. I’m not such a big fan of Taylor’s writing style but her creativity and character creation are off the charts and really those are the two things I read for. I’m sad though you don’t love Rainbow Rowell… though I understand her characters aren’t for everyone! ♥️ I love these reviews their one of my favorite types from you!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hahaha I wouldn’t call myself “brave”… More like “lazy” 😂😂 Because sometimes short stories are all my attention span can manage!
I mostly agree, but as I mentioned if an author is talented enough they can manage to accomplish that or at least make their story so satisfactory that the reader won’t really notice the lack of it. Which is what happened with Laini Taylor’s story, for instance, and Kiersten White’s. Also loved Ally Carter’s and Matt de la Peña’s. The others, however, failed in that aspect completely.
I love her writing style! And, of course, her world building is phenomenal.
As for Rowell’s, yeah, I’ve tried to get into her but so far, have been unsuccessful! What are you favorite books from her, that you would recommend me? I don’t want to give up on her yet, but I need something a bit different from what I’ve read thus far. It’s not just the characters, though, her writing style doesn’t really pull me in much either…
Thank you so much, Dani! I’m glad you enjoy them 😊 ❤

  11. Interesting.. your review of this book reminds me of the anthology you read for Halloween. I haven’t read a book with so many authors in it before. Many authors are well known in this book but sorry you didn’t enjoy it much. Congrats Sophie! You got through many Christmas books this Christmas season. I planned to read one and I didn’t even read it. I’ll read it in January and be the odd one out hahah.. Great review!

You should definitely give it a try! It’s a nice experience, even if you don’t always end up loving every single short story. And you also get to meet different authors and styles mixed together, which is always cool 🙂
Aw thank you! Not as many as I would have liked, though hahaha I’m still hoping to read a couple more before the end of the year but time is slipping through my fingers… We’ll see how it goes! What was the one you were planning on reading, if you don’t mind my asking?

      1. I actually wanted to read A Christmas Carol because I couldn’t get to it in 2016, but I also missed it in 2017 as well. Time sure slip by fast! Then The Twelve Dogs of Christmas showed up at my door and I planned to read it as well but getting together with family and renewing Netflix subscription really put reading to the bottom of the list for me in December. So I’m really envious that you could get through so many books in the same month that I couldn’t 🙂

Oh don’t be! It took a lot of effort to try and squeeze as many books as possible in my schedule… And most were short, anyway. Plus, spending time with family and traveling sounds a lot of fun!

  12. Oh my, I did not expect to hear you say “weird” that many time for these short stories! There are some really huge authors in this anthology, and it’s truly amazing how their reputation as writers doesn’t immediately mean that they can also write up amazing short stories. Honestly, short stories are an art of their own. Way harder to do it right within so little pages! I’m not surprised to hear how awesome Laini Taylor’s story was though. I only hear amazing things about her writing style! Sorry to hear how this was.. well.. disappointing. Anthologies sure aren’t easy to love. They all seem to have highs and lows. Hopefully you’ll pick up a good one soon enough and be relieved that anthologies can actually love you! 😛 It’s just a matter of time. 😉 Awesome reviews, Sophie!

P.S. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, Sophie! I know you love to be SUPER busy, and I’m assuming it hasn’t eased up during the Holidays, but I hope 2018 will prove to be much less stressful and much more fun for you. Maybe even hear from you more often? 😀 😀 HAPPY NEW YEAR IN ADVANCE!!

    1. Hahaha me neither! But that’s how things are… Never easy for me and anthologies 😂
Yup, that’s something I’ve come to learn as well. No matter how much these big name authors are praised, they still failed to convince me in this. It actually made me fear for my reaction to their novels, but maybe it’s just a short story thing. They CAN be super hard to write, so…
Laini Taylor is such a literary goddess ❤ ❤ She hasn't disappointed me once!
Oh I would love for that to happen! It would be a relief, for sure 😂😂 I don't like writing so many meh reviews… Especially after being so hyped for the books!

  16. Anthologies are always so difficult to read and review. There are some great stories in this book and some that just fall flat. I am glad that you enjoyed some of them. It is a great way to discover a new author as well. Happy New Year! 🙂

  17. You seem to be having bad luck with these story collections! I guess they are by their very nature going to be hard to completely love as they are a mix of different authors and styles, and some will blow you away, others won’t. Would be nice if they all could though!

I haven’t read many anthologies myself, but I remember having the same problem with the few I did read. I also tend to like being drawn in and immersed in one long novel, rather than having to keep starting new stories… but I really must try to read more as I know there are amazing ones out there.

Btw it made me smile to see your review for Laini Taylor’s story at the end, she really is an amazing writer!! 🙂

    1. Yeah, I understand that but I also think the editors have the responsibility to provide quality content for their readers… And it makes me wonder just how much of it has to do with book politics rather than genuine love for these stories. Eh.
I also understand everyone has different tastes and you won’t be able to please everyone. But I’m still waiting for a more cohesive collection!
Thank you very much for your comment, Nicola ❤ It always makes my day 🙂 And yes, Laini Taylor, the Queen herself, will always only only high praises from me!

      1. Yes I see what you mean, if the editor was really out selecting the stories they most enjoyed with no thought for anything else, you’d probably get a more quality, cohesive collection. Makes me wonder if those magazines with short stories (I can only think of the fantasy and sci-fi ones like Clarkesworld) might have better collections, since they get sent lots and I imagine pick based on the merits of each one… but who knows. Certainly not me, since I read these so rarely! Anyway, I hope you find that elusive more cohesive collection soon.
And you’re welcome, I love your reviews, they are always so thorough and well written! (and very helpful for figuring out if a book that might be up my alley or not 🙂 )
