The Kiss of Deception – Book Review (Spoiler-Free)

kiss-of-deception

Hey everyone! I hope you’re all doing great and having a wonderful weekend 😊

Today I bring you another review of a book that I’ve been meaning to read for forever. And now that the trilogy is over, I thought it was the perfect time to do it.

This is my new book crush, by the way. So if I sound like I’m fangirling like a maniac, it’s because I am!

This review is completely spoiler-free.

synopsis

Princess Arabella (who prefers being called Lia), First Daughter of the House of Morrighan, flees on her wedding day. She doesn’t want to marry some “old toad” to secure a political alliance, much less someone she’s never met.

She’s ready to start life anew with her best friend Pauline in a faraway village, but of course there are obstacles. Two obsctacles, to be precise: one determined prince trying to bring her back and one deadly assassin trying to kill her.

I wasn’t expecting this trilogy to be anything like this. I was expecting a lot of YA drama, stupid characters, an even stupider story line and really, really cheesy romance. Let me tell you right now, it’s none of that. I mean, it’s the entire opposite of that. It was absolutely awesome.

Everything? Well, I’d say about 98% of this book is amazing. And the other 2% is just me being picky.

The Kiss of Deception grabbed my attention from the very start. The author has this almost flawless way of explaining things and bringing the reader into her world, slowly pulling us in. It never felt like an info dump, although there’s ton of information to process.

I could clearly envision everything Pearson wrote about, and her writing felt almost poetic, especially when she described how her characters were feeling. There was so much rawness and emotion.

There’s a huge amount of political intrigue in this, which I was so happy about. You’re never really sure who Lia can trust or not and I feared for her life constantly. Basically, this book keeps you on edge a lot.

Speaking of Lia, she is one of the strongest, most grounded heroines I have ever come across. And not in a “badass”, obvious kind of way. She’s no Celaena Sardothien. She’s a pretty average girl overall.

Only as the story progresses do we really get to see how mentally strong and fierce she is. Her personality really shines through in crucial moments. She changes a lot throughout the story, due to her circumstances, but overall she doesn’t stray too far from the person she was from the start. She simply grows and adapts, learning which decisions to make, which sides to take and, mostly, how to survive.

The guys. I loved them, in very different ways. Or rather, I enjoyed one’s character and personality, but clearly fell in love with the other. I’ve heard many people say they had a lot of trouble choosing one over the other, changing their opinion constantly. And I can understand why: they’re both very likeable. But again, in very different ways. I guess it really depends on the type of love interest you prefer.

Lia and Pauline’s relationship is so awesome. They’re so different but they complement each other so well – all of Lia’s faults are Pauline’s strengths, and vice-versa. Their time together was honestly one of the most enjoyable parts of this book. I loved Pauline’s fierce loyalty, her kindness and her gentleness, and Lia’s fierce protectiveness, her determination and her sassiness.

Not only do we get really nice moments of companionship from them, but from all the other women they come to befriend as well. They developed this wonderful group that not only stands up for and helps one another, but that also has tons of fun together.

The plot twist! THE PLOT TWIST, you guys. I was not expecting it! I had a pretty clear vision in my mind of things, and then all of a sudden it was shattered in the most unexpected and awesome of ways. And I almost hit myself for not realizing that, of course, things shouldn’t have been as crystal clear!

Some people will probably pick up on it sooner, but I have to say Pearson was masterful at disguising her true intentions. Looking back, I’m still not able to fully grasp the extent of her cunning schemes.

There are some more plot twists in between that are just as unexpected and will make you question everything. Like, EVERYTHING.

Lia got kind of annoying at one point. There was just this instalove vibe going on that I kept swatting away but wouldn’t really disappear and it made me really fed up. She just kept focusing too much of her energy and thoughts on it. And okay, I get it, she’s seventeen and it would be normal for her to feel like that, I guess. But ugh.

Besides the fact that it was not my ship, it was also kind of just boring and a bit nauseating after all the amazing stuff that had happened until then. Was it to show that she was a normal teenager with normal teenage urges? Maybe. Did I enjoy it? No.

Thankfully, it didn’t last too long.

Man, I have no words to describe how wonderful this book is. Pretty much everything about it was absolutely fantastic!

I loved the writing, the world building, the characters, the romance, the plot… It was all so nicely woven together and made perfect sense no matter which way you turned.

The plot twists were absolutely masterful. The way the author tricked the reader into thinking one thing and then another, making them keep questioning themselves over and over again until the climax… Genius.

The slow burning romance had me begging for more each and every time. It wasn’t overbearing and the characters didn’t behave like idiots (most of the time).

I loved the love triangle, which is something you probably won’t hear from me ever again. I loved how, despite it playing a huge part in the whole story, it never really outshone the actual plot or what was going on. Except for maybe once or twice, which is a pretty decent ratio, I’d say.

This book never felt like a chore. It had an amazing pace and even when nothing relevant was happening, it still made it look interesting and pleasureable to read. I was never bored with it and I can barely wait to find out what happens next!

My only complaint? LET MY SHIP SAIL, FOR THE GODS’ SAKE.

I recommend The Kiss of Deception times infinity.

  1. I had actually written this off thinking it wouldn’t be something I like after reading a bunch of mixed reviews. But it looks like I’m definitely going to have to read this one after all! This sounds amazing, I’m so glad you loved it so much! I NEED THIS NOW. ❤ Lovely review, Sophie!

    1. Oh I’m so glad to hear it!! Of course, everyone’s different and you might not like it but I personally did and recommend you at least give it a try and find out for yourself 😊
Thank you so much, Analee! ❤ ❤ ❤ I really, really hope you love it as much as I did! And do let me know what you thought of it if you do end up reading it ^^

    1. Oh believe me, I didn’t remember this one had a love triangle in it and when I realized I was soooo disappointed! But then, as I went on reading, I just really got into it and it didn’t really bother me as much. Except when Lia was leaning towards the guy I’m not rooting for hahaha
I really hope you enjoy it, Renz! The love triangle is not as pronounced as I was expecting and the story/plot is honestly so good you barely notice anything bad about it.
Let me know what you thought of it, if you do end up giving it a try 😊 And thank you so much! ❤ ❤

  2. I loved this book! I’ve read it a long time ago when it was first published but I haven’t finished the series yet. I’m planning to binge read the whole trilogy at once. I hope you enjoy rest of the series too! 🙂

    1. Thank you, Raven! 🙂 I hope you do too! ^^
I’m on the second book now, and it’s just as good if not better, which makes me very happy. BUT I will not get too ecstatic in case it disappoints me hahaha (please please don’t disappoint me)

    1. I knoooow, it’s very unusual of me! XD But this book didn’t give me a chance… There was not much I could point out about it!
Well, I can understand if someone doesn’t like it. There’s the love triangle, for one, and a kind of slow beginning with the ritual, which wasn’t my favorite either. But after those first few pages, it really gets you hooked! At least for me.
Plus, the guys! Mandy, I think you’d love them! Or, you know, one of them at least XD They’re honestly so swoony and cool. Sigh.
I hope you do enjoy it, if you try it again. This is the second time I’m able to convince you to read a book you didn’t particularly care about and it makes me feel super happy! XD But honestly, I think it’s a great story so maybe you’ll like it. Or even love it. Who knows? 😛
Thank you so much, Mandy! ❤ ❤

I really hope you enjoy it 🙂 It was a pleasant surprise for me, as I was expecting a completely different read. So glad I was proved wrong!
I’d love to hear what you thought of it, if you decide to give it a shot! Thank you so much for stopping by 😊 ❤

I really think you'll love it based on my own experience. But we all have such different tastes it's impossible to predict who'll like what hahaha
I really hope I'm right, though!
This one has minimal drama, if I recall correctly. I was surprised too but was not complaining XD
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it! 😊

  5. “slow burning romance”, “plot twists”, and “love triangle” Sophie, you have me convinced to read this book right now! No need for anymore persuasion! haha.. I’m glad you enjoyed this book and awesome review!!

  6. I LOVE THIS SERIES! It is one of the best series for character growth I have ever seen. Great review! I’m glad more people are giving this series a chance and connecting to it in a positive way!

    1. Absolutely agree! It’s also so amazing on so many other aspects, and so cohesive too.
I’m currently reading book two and it feels as put together as the previous one, if not more! It’s hard to find that in YA nowadays and I’m so glad I decided to give it a chance.
Thank you so much for stopping by, Frankie! 😊 ❤

  7. I totally loved this book as well! However, I was totally confused throughout most of the book as to which guy was which, so… It made so much more sense after I figured that out! I never got around to reading the sequel; I should definitely read the whole series now that it’s out!

    1. Yay!! I’m so glad to know ^^
Hahaha fun fact: I hadn’t realized there was supposed to be a mystery about that? LOL I just always assumed which one was which and left it at that. (Which now that I think about it, was pretty dumb of me because there were times when things didn’t make complete sense and I just couldn’t fully grasp why).
Then came the big reveal and I was like, “wait… what?” XD
I’m almost embarrassed to confess this but it’s true! (My assumptions were incorrect, by the way hahaha)
It took me a while to get used to the “new” idea, so I was actually more confused after we figured it out… Terrible XD
I’m on book two and couldn’t recommend it enough! ❤ I don't know about the third instalment but I will definitely finish the trilogy, no matter what.

  8. So glad to see how much you loved this, Sophie! Honestly, I think I have the same first impressions as you did, until I read this review. 😀 I do love a pleasant surprise, and this one sounds like one! The characters sounds awesome and the plot twists sound even more amazing. Hopefully book 2 and 3 will keep on blowing your mind away! Fantastic review as always (always appreciate the bitter parts by the way!). 😀

    1. Thank you, Lashaan! I’m glad you appreciate the less positive aspects as well 😊 I feel it’s so important to mention them when reviewing a book, no matter how much you love it. People should know what to expect, after all.
I honestly can not recommend this trilogy enough! It’s true that it can be a bit romance-focused in the first book (compared to other fantasy books) but it never becomes bothersome because the plot is still there and thriving (subtly).
The second book, though, is where the magic happens. It gets soooo good! ❤ ❤ I had high expectations for it but they were completely topped. The characters get even better, the political intrigue and world building are off the charts… I'm really enjoying it so far!
I just hope the third and final installment isn't a disappointment…
Thank you so much again for your kind words, Lashaan 😊 Truly, they always make my day!

First of all, welcome to the blogging world! I hope you’re having fun so far ^^
Thank you so much ❤ As for tips… I'd advise you to post regularly, visit other blogs as often as you can, and make your reviews as accessible as possible. Meaning: short, simple, to the point and, most importantly, honest. Don't worry if you can't always meet deadlines and don't stress too much over how many books you read per month. Take it easy and be kind to yourself!
Well, I hope these help! I'm not a connoisseur or anything, this is just stuff I've learned along the way and I'm sure you will too 🙂
I'll be checking your blog out now! Happy blogging and see you around, Breeny ❤

  10. Oh I’ve been meaning to read it for years too (in part due to that gorgeous cover- but also everyone seems to love it!) I’m so glad it’s so fantastic- because this only confirms what I’ve already heard and makes me want to read it even more (plus- it’s not a typical YA book- yes please, SIGN ME UP!!!) Awesome review!!!

    1. Thank you so much!! Oh I’m glad you’re giving this a chance 🙂 It’s so worth it! And yes, definitely not your average YA story. I mean, it sounds like one but its execution is in a whole different league, in my opinion.
Can’t wait to read your thoughts on it!! ^^ (And yes, cover love right here!!)

    1. Hahaha I thought you might like chocolate 😛 (Dunno why!)
It felt a bit like instalove at first, but it was not suuuper distracting. Plus, it gets much better as the story progresses 🙂
Me neither! It was such a pleasant surprise to know a much more complex plot would take place ^^ I’m so glad I decided to give this a try in the end. Totally worth it!
Thank you so much Donna 😊 ❤

  11. Wow, this sounds like an amazing book! From the plot summary I would have also had all those initial expectations you had re. YA clichés and stupid characters etc., so that’s cool it didn’t go in that direction at all. I love political intrigue and plot twists you don’t see coming, as well as grounded heroines… sounds like it might be my kind of book 🙂 (I’m normally not a fan of love triangles but if this one is well done, which it sounds like it is, I think I can handle it!)

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I really hope it is! I personally loved it but I know some people who despised it.
The love triangle is there but it’s not too distracting and kind of fades into the background as the story progresses (and especially in the following books).
I thought the author was immensely clever throughout, and the characters too. There’s not a lot of political intrigue at the very start but you do see its potential and I think by the end, a lot of stuff has been revealed. Again, the sequels carry a lot more of it.
I hope you enjoy this if you decide to read it! 😊❤️

      1. “Immensely clever” bodes very well! The one thing I can’t stand is stupid characters and simplistic storytelling, and this sounds like it has neither. And I like that the sequels are also promising. I’m intrigued – I think I will indeed give this one a read! 🙂

  12. I loved this series too! And I felt like such an idiot for not even realising Pearson was setting us up for a plot twist. I wonder whether bcos I listened to the audio book I missed some hints I would have picked up on in a paperback (chapter headers for example). But the way she did it was genius, I was pleasantly surprised rather than annoyed I’d got it wrong 😂 amazing review Sophie! Have you read the next book yet??

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hahahaha yes! I don’t think so, I read it and STILL missed it hahaha
I wasn’t annoyed but I was like: “oh, you clever woman you! I soooo fell for it” XD Many people spent most of the novel trying to guess who was who, so I’m not sure if I missed on all the fun or was instead lucky to be focused on the story.
I’ve just finished the trilogy! It was really cool, except for the fact that my ship didn’t sail… 😥 But other than that, yeah, awesome!
