Amaama to Inazuma – Anime Review

Hey guys, welcome back! I hope you’re all having a great week (ˆᴗˆ)

So I’ve been watching a lot more anime lately and decided I should post about it to mix things up a little. And also because it’s been so long since my Nisekoi review, I didn’t want you guys to think I’d given up on anime! I actually plan on having more reviews ready soon.

Note that this review might contain a few spoilers for Amaama to Inazuma. However, as you’ll see, that won’t make too much of a difference if you plan to watch it. Still, read at your own risk!

synopsis

Amaama to Inazuma (Sweetness and Lightning) tells the story of Kouhei Inuzuka, a teacher and widower, who tries his best to raise his young daughter Tsugumi on his own. But due to a busy life and no culinary skills to speak of, Kouhei mostly relies on a babysitter, friends and meals from the convenience store. Everything changes when he crosses path with Kotori Iida, one of his students and an absolute foodie.

I knew an anime about a father and daughter would have to be quite adorable and I wasn’t disappointed. They are such a sweet family. Tsugumi is possibly one of the cutest kids I’ve ever seen and every episode you feel like you’re going on an adventure with her. However, I wasn’t expecting the entire anime to revolve around food and domestic life as much as it did.

Amaama to Inazuma depicts family life and child behavior in absolute perfection. It captured Tsumugi’s peculiarities and personality really well and made her the absolute star of the show. She’s very sweet and energetic despite everything that happened, but she does sulk and throw tantrums once in a while, like all kids do.

All of the characters were incredibly likeable, to be honest. They all had their quirks and distinct personalities and it was just very heartwarming to watch them. Sometimes it felt like they were real people with real stories; neighbors I could watch from my window as they went by their day. We also got to know them and their stories little by little, which was quite cool. The dialogues were also very genuine and relatable, even if they weren’t always the most groundbreaking. But I guess that’s what made the anime so nice to watch.

It was really touching to see how Kouhei and Kotori both helped each other cope with their own pain and loneliness, all through food. Food is, again, very important in this anime, carrying a sort of spiritual healing to it. It brings people together and makes them bond through a common interest.

Kouhei’s devotion to his daughter is absolutely endearing and will make you smile all the time. I also liked that, despite having the death of Tsugumi’s mother as a focal point, the anime never becomes depressing or uncomfortable to watch. Sure, there are moments when you feel a bit sad but not enough to cry or feel your heart tighten. (This can also be a downside, though.)

The art was really nice, full of bright colors and playful details. All the meals looked incredibly realistic and so yummy they made me hungry half the time. The voice actors were all great, with special focus on Tsumugi’s (Rina Endou), who truly brought that little girl to life.

This anime is completely – and I mean, completely – about domestic life. Every day is about the Inuzukas learning a new recipe, cooking it and eating it together. That’s it, every single episode.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing and I did enjoy every episode to some extent. There’s no way I couldn’t. But when there’s not an actual plot and very few variations between episodes, one eventually grows a bit bored. There were minor reveals and some conflict going on sometimes, but overall every episode felt the same.

I would have enjoyed getting to know Kouhei and Kotori and all the other characters at a deeper level. Their passions, aspirations, their thoughts. But we barely get a glimpse at anything outside Tsugumi. I get that the anime is supposed to be about her and her father and how they cope after her mother’s death, but we also get very little information about this person or their feelings regarding the situation. So, eventually, that also feels a bit flat.

In the first few episodes we get to know Kouhei’s colleagues but they’re never really spoken of again. I would have liked to see Kohuei interacting with them and having a social life. But I guess he doesn’t really have much time for that. Kotori’s school life would also have been something I would be interested in getting into a bit more.

Tsugumi did feel a bit tiring and overwhelming in places, especially towards the end. I don’t know if that was just me or if the anime really did become too much about her.

I think you need to be quite the foodie to truly enjoy this anime but give it a try even if you aren’t. It’s quite adorable and there’s really nothing I could point out about it that is inherently bad. However, there was quite a lot of room for improvement. The story could have developed a lot more and explored the characters’ arcs to a greater extent, for one.

This is a slice of life about a dad and his daughter cooking their way through pain and  having fun with friends, old and new. There’s nothing extraordinary going on and no big twists, but it’s a nice anime all the same. I actually think its strength might lie in its subtlety and simplicity.

You also learn quite a few recipes and a lot of cooking tips, if you’re into that sort of thing.

If you don’t enjoy the first episode, don’t bother with the rest since they’re essentially the same and follow the exact same structure. But if you do end up watching it, you’ll probably feel your kawaii meter go up a bit every time.

  1. If you want to try another Slice of Life, again no real plot but they are so cute, funny, and sweet to watch: Barakamon and Bunny Drop. Kyoukai no Kanata is a good one too that has more plot to it.

I really liked your review! I might have to look it up.

    1. Thanks so much for the suggestions! I realized recently I mostly read/watch slices of life but I’m really open to any genre, as long as it’s not horror I guess.
I’m a sucker for cute things, though, and this one was great in that department ^^
Thank you and I hope you enjoy it!

  2. Your chocolate graphics are amazing! Thank you for putting in so much hard work!

The show sounds like a comfortable one to watch. I’m glad that there wasn’t really much of an age difference romance from the sound of it.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this show! (。☌ᴗ☌。)

    1. Hahaha funny you should mention it… (spoilers ahead)
I actually thought this was going to feature a teacher-student relationship in it, which I usually enjoy. Yet in this particular anime I was glad nothing of that nature happened because it would have totally ruined it.
Kouhei and Kotori have such a nice friendship, pure and selfless. Plus, Kouhei lost his wife only six months prior so it would not make sense for him to fall in love with anyone at this point. He really only has eyes for his daughter.
Give it a try if you want to. You’ll be able to tell whether you like it or not based on the first episode alone.
Thank you so much for reading and commenting! I really appreciate your input, as always (⌒ω⌒) And I think the chocolate graphics are here to stay!

  3. Great review! 🙂 I enjoyed Amaama to Inazuma quiet a bit when I watched it. The characters were definitely my favourite part of it, they were all very interesting and sooo much different from each other. Tsumugi is my favourite, she is seriously the cutest! I have to agree that the pacing and story weren’t the best, after all it was basically the same format over and over again. The art and music were amazing though. 😀

    1. Thank you! 🙂 Yeah, like I said I really enjoyed the anime but would have liked it if there had been more to it than just the same format over and over again. There was a lot that could have been done and improved. The art and voice actors were definitely a big plus!
I still recommend it but I know some people will not be able to finish all twelve episodes without feeling a bit underwhelmed.
Thank you so much for reading and commenting! 🙂 ❤

  4. Your graphics are making me hungry. Again. Ah well.

I’ve heard of this anime and has been avoiding it wholeheartedly. Nothing against its content but sweet, fluffy slice o life would bore me to tears in less than 15 minutes. So yeah, never gonna watch this but it was still very interesting to read your review and what you liked and disliked about it. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hahaha thank you so much! That means a lot, actually ^^
I understand completely, it’s not for everyone. Even I, who love food, was a bit bored at times. Thankfully, it was cute and visually appealing enough to keep me entertained.
Thanks again for the nice words! 🙂

  5. Good post and just love the presentation / graphical use on your blog. I recognise them shapes xDD canva. Yeah loved this series, although it did get major competition from poco’ udon world.

    1. Thank you! I do have Poco’s Udon World on my watchlist. I guess both are indeed quite similar, but for some reason Amaama to Inazuma caught my interest first. I want to check out the other one too, though.
      Thanks for stopping by! ^^

  6. This anime is so cute! Loved the characters in it too, but have been stuck halfway through for…well…more than a few months lol. I have a hard time with stories lacking an overall plot (didn’t help that, as you mentioned, things get pretty repetitive) but this looked so cute I had to give it a try. Your review reminded me about the good parts so thanks for that. Also hearing it stays relatively the same helps me avoid getting disappointed, so I’ll try giving it another go =)

    1. I’m glad this one was helpful to you! ^^ Yeah I wasn’t sure if I should include such a spoilery bit like that, but honestly I don’t think it makes any difference while watching this anime. What you see is what you get, really xD So it saves you time and disappointment.

      1. I agree and am really glad you decided to add that bit in. I really dislike spoilers, but from what I’ve seen of the series so far what you said really isn’t all that different from saying a show/book series “gets much better” or “starts to get worse”. So no worries there 😊

  7. Yes, another great post and an Anime one as well. Cool! Nice to read that you are going to be writing more about these soon. Looking forward to those. As for this series I have not seen it yet, but after reading the plot and your post it definitely is on my list now.
As for another great Slice of life drama you might enjoy Orange. I really enjoyed that series and highly recommend it.
Looking forward to your next post 😀

    1. Thank you so much! 😊 I know about Orange and actually tried reading the manga once but never got around to finishing it. It’s quite sad, though, isn’t it? I guess I need to be in the right mood to watch the anime hahaha
Yes I really want to write more diverse posts! So expect more anime reviews soon, among other things.
I hope you enjoy Amaama to Inazuma 😄 And thanks for your constant support!

  8. I think I’ve seen the first couple episodes of this series. It’s quite adorable. 🙂 Have you tried Bunny Drop? It’s a bit similar, I think, though the relationship is somewhat different (rather than father/daughter it’s….well, something else).

                    1. Yes, they are absolutely hilarious! Cuthroat Kitchen actually makes me a bit uncomfortable though XD I like it better when it’s fair and people play nice hahaha
I do feel producers are starting to focus more on the comedic/silly/sensational aspect of it rather than on the actual cooking since it sells better… Nothing against it, as long as we keep the good ol’ cooking shows running. Most of them are still quite enjoyable though.
Alton is a laugh! And I can picture him as an anime character very easily XD

                    2. That’s true. I don’t like shows like My Kitchen Rules. I’m watching it on Hulu and it’s about celebrity duos cooking for other celebrity duos at dinner parties and the like. The scoring system is terrible because their competitors are directly scoring them, so if the dinner was great but someone wants to try and send you home? They can deliberately score you really low, which is enormously unfair and very dishonest. On the flip side, one team can score another super high if they’d prefer them to win over a team they hate.

  9. I’ve been in search of a slice of life anime and this one sounds really cute, but I’m not sure I can watch a show that has little variety episode to episode :/ I still might give it a try though! I love food, so that’s a plus. And they seem like really cute characters. Awesome review! 😀

    1. Thank you, Azia! ❤ I would suggest you watch the first episode and see if you like it. If you do, you might want to go ahead. If you don't, give up right now. Just remember: there's 12 more episodes almost exactly like it XD
I wasn't super bored about the lack of variety, I was just a bit disappointed because there was tons of potential. I just wanted more! The show itself is quite sweet and has great characters. So, in the end, it comes down to personal preference and mood 🙂

  10. I really liked this anime. My main complaint with the show was that there were a few mishandled scenes. However, Tsumugi is on point for a child character (I work a lot with kids) and I’m weirdly into cooking shows that don’t focus on JUST cooking. Not only that, but there was a father-daughter dynamic that I love seeing in anime and you don’t really see much outside the other two examples that were provided (Barakamon and Usagi Drop – similar at least). Plus Tsumugi sings! Any way, fun review and thanks again for following! 😀

    1. I’m the same! Except the kids part, I don’t deal with them on a regular basis nor do I know how to deal with them hahaha
But I still thought Tsugumi was absolutely adorable and so much fun ❤️ I loved the relationship with her dad and everyone else, they sure made for a wonderful story more than anything else. And I loved learning about Japanese cuisine! I’m a sucker for it 😂
So yeah, all criticism aside, this is one cute slice of life that is great to relax and unwind a bit after a long day. It’ll make anyone’s heart swell up.
Thank you, Jon, for the lovely comment! And of course 😊
